Not long after I shot the turbulent sky featured yesterday, this magnificent rainbow began to form just to the southeast. I had run out of the house in a hurry when the rumbling began and didn't bring anything wider than 24mm... not wide enough! But I like this vertical shot of one end of it, like a metal prism driven straight into the ground, its hues brilliant against the dark grey sky.

When I heard the first rumblings of thunder to the southwest, I grabbed my camera and tripod and headed out. After clearing city limits thirty seconds later, views opened up on all sides. I had no specific goal other than to make myself available and try not to get zapped.
Driving, looking. Looking for telltale flashes in the dark clouds. Looking for a touch of brightness, a swirl of colour, a crack in the sky where the light might come pouring through. At Masefield - a rural municipality, pop. 0 in the 2006 census, which I find hard to believe since there are cows and houses and I'm sure the cows aren't herding themselves - I turned up the dirt road at the cemetery. Stopped right here.
In moments, light flooded the scene. The thick clouds appeared to be mammatus in early formation. At least there was no rotation or other indication of a tornado in the works (although that would have been very exciting). I was able to sit in my car atop a little hill, high and dry, as golden light spread across the land.
Tomorrow: a glimpse of what came next...

Yesterday's shot showed some heavy ground fog over a ditch and field. Just beyond that point the road makes a 90* left, and within a mile the fog thinned dramatically (I was farther from the river and the sun was rising to spread its warmth). And then I saw this fogbow.
It was only the 4th fogbow I've photographed. They are much rarer than rainbows. Sometimes called white rainbows or ghost rainbows because their colour is very subtle or absent altogether, fogbows are fairly rare. The water droplets in fog are incredibly tiny, therefore they interact with light via diffraction, and very little colour is refracted (as in a rainbow, where the droplets are much larger).
Most fogbows exist only briefly, but this one was visible in the morning sky for more than an hour. I will post one more shot of it later today - a rare double posting for me, but I did miss a day last week - and then move on to different weather phenomena as the week goes on. Summer is the time for dramatic weather on the northern prairie...

At least half a dozen plants are commonly called Skeletonweed. This species may be the prettiest.
There's nothing pretty about the name, though, is there? Skeletons are fascinating, especially skeletons of dinosaurs, but the word does conjure up visions of dancing Halloween apparitions. Weeds don't get much respect, either. For the most part, we just want weeds gone.
Yet this native perennial, found in sandy soils and dry uplands throughout my corner of the prairie, is quite lovely when examined close up. The delicate pink inflorescence appears at the end of long, scraggly stems - hence the name - that make the entire plant difficult to photograph. So I focused on a single bloom, looking so delicate, but in reality, so tough.
I am taking a three day break from insects, but will return with a fly, a bee, and a butterfly. First, however, a flower, a landscape, and a landscape with flowers. Beauty occurs on both the miniscule scale and the grand; I see each as a gift. If I am open to everything nature offers, I will never come home from a shoot disappointed.
