HOUSE OF PINKU

Fall 2010

Thanks for the views, faves and comments

As promised, a shift from funny signs and ducks in flight to the winter prairie... and I'll get to the "beauty of nature" soon enough, but first, the bleak side.

I have photographed this old, gutted, abandoned house for a quarter century. It's still standing, but perhaps not for long. I've looked at it close up, but somehow prefer it in context. And that context changes depending on which surrounding items I choose to include or leave out, choice of background, the season itself, the light, and many other factors. For example, a large thicket of low-growing trees nearby provides a nesting place for great horned owls. A different approach to the house would reveal the rich crop and pasture lands behind it. And so on.

An abandoned house, btw, is not always a sign of failure. In some situations a family found it cheaper to build a new house in a better location than to keep the old one going. Some families have been on their land here for four generations. Things change.

Yes, it's bleak, but so it goes in January. Winters here can be severe, summers sublime.

It's a beat-up, smashed, rusted, shot-full-of-holes, falling-to-pieces relic that has sat in this field since the early 1960s. A 1939 Pontiac, original colour green. My friend Maurice, who would have been in his mid-twenties when the car was finally put out to pasture, was coy when I asked him if he was responsible for any of the bullet holes. "Maybe," he said, smiling.

Birds have nested on what's left of its upholstery, and animals have dug under it, presumably for shelter and concealment. Its left front fender is a work of art, and I have photographed it in macro mode, with wide angle and fisheye lenses; at dawn, midday, dusk, and at night beneath the Milky Way and Aurora borealis. In every season.

I just checked my files, and since 2009 I have stopped there 30 times with my camera.

I made this shot with the Rokinon 8mm fisheye, preventing horizon curvature by levelling the camera. Tilting it slightly up or down would have produced a pronounced curve. A straight horizon with this lens means the frame is divided into two equal halves, often an uncomfortable proportion, but it can work. Here the top half is all sky, and very different from the bottom half with the car in its snowy field.

In other situations - with different subject matter - I might consider a pano crop, chopping some from the top or the bottom. But not here.

One more to come - for now - of the old beast. That front left fender. The gift that keeps giving.

Quando ainda trabalhava.

Seven minutes after yesterday's shot of a full moon setting over the buttes, a little farther up the valley, I had to stop. A herd of Pronghorn were lined up on the crest of a ridge, against the sky.

Fifteen years ago, the substantial pronghorn herd in Grasslands took an enormous hit when winter produced a phenomenal amount of snow. Snow like the old-timers said they had not seen in fifty years. Snow that was impossible to scrape away to find forage beneath. Snow that led to starvation.

Many of the surviving animals fled south, into Montana. They crossed the Missouri River on the ice, and then were trapped on the other side the following spring when flooding made it impossible for them to swim back across to their northern calving grounds.

As a result, pronghorn disappeared from Grasslands, and a moratorium on hunting was declared - outside the park; hunting is not permitted within - to allow populations to rebuild. It has been slow going.

In 2024, however, I saw more pronghorn in the park than I had since 2010. And in January of this year, I saw the largest herd yet. Very encouraging. Very wonderful. Here are fewer than half the number in view on that ridge, as seen from the rolling red Toyota blind.

A solid set of U25B's are at the West end of Goodman Street Yard in Rochester, NY on May 21, 1977. This was power for either the salt train to Caledonia or the train up to Kodak or Charlotte. The U25B was my favorite GE locomotive, and they were in abundance during the early Conrail years.

With B23-7 No. 2501 and GP38-2 No. 2019 painted in a fancy dark blue/grey paint scheme used by locomotives assigned to their passenger trains (Chepe and Tequila Express) as power, Ferromex's 3 car executive (OCS) train passes by the town of Ciudad Mendoza under heavy rain as it makes it's way to the Veracruz ports, with all sorts of high-ranked employees aboard checking the status of several MOW projects along the way.

Conrail 2501 is the leader of a trio of U25-B's on an Eastbound freight adjacent to the Chessie Lincoln Park engine terminal in Rochester, NY on April 30, 1980. The Conrail main usually afforded plenty of action while waiting for the RS-97 crew to get ready to head down to get their train at Brooks Ave.

Kari Byron from Discovery Channel's 'Mythbusters' speaks to students at Eastern Illinois University on September 26, 2007. The event began at 8:00 p.m. Byron spoke about the show, showed a blooper reel to the audience then yielded questions from the audience.
