Inside is a homemade opto-coupler. A pair of ir photosensors and ir LED's form a bridge to isolate the micro-controller from the 24VAC thermostat lines.
The signal is not filtered as well as it should be, so the micro-controller had to be programmed for some heavy duty debouncing (single rectified AC creates a flashing light which the controller is fast enough to miss).

It's not sending the 24VAC from this control box to the gas valve, so
the Trane XL90 doesn’t ignite, the gas doesn’t turn on, At Sears this
sells for $235.00
I opened the circuit board and I see the relay that must be the
culprit. But I can’t just buy the replacement relay in the USA, if I
where in Tonga or Samoa we could fix it easily. Looks lke I have to
find and buy the white-rodgers ignition control box model #50e47-060,
sure beats calling the repair man! $$$ ( I cleaned up the contol box
and got it working but for how long? )

24VAC is rectified and smoothed into about 35VDC.
A voltage divider trickles ~15VDC into the 7805 voltage regulator.
The 7508 provides a nice smooth 5VDC for the micro-controller.

Rigged up a balanced DC power supply to test a new transformer. 24VA power transformer delivers a bit more than 37V DC. When split with the center tap on the transformer's secondary winding, it comes out to a nice, even +/-18V. Sweet.

The Vishay IL410 phototriacs, with a triggger current less than 2mA, can be driven directly by the PIC18F2455 on the UBW board. The output side of the IL410s will drive irrigation valves at 24VAC.
Here's a close-up video of the left side, of the main console. The larger XLR connectors connectors are power to the "targets" and things in the gallery themselves. Most are "two pole" with a layout of the left pole being (-) and the right positive (+) 24vAC current (at about .3 amps) or a little over 7 watts. Most of the connectors' bottom pin is dead. As noted above, a few rare ones use the lower "third" pin. In our gallery the only thing to use this is electric motors. In both cases, a transformer is used to step the 24VAC up to 220VAC and use three phase power. In those instances the "third pin" or bottom is also positive (+).
