The most abundant grebe in the world though not found in the eastern part of north America, and only found around here in winter. That said, they are found year round in Mono Lake and the Great Salt Lake. I don't know about the GSL, but Mono Lake provides them with plenty of food. (Oddly, and remember this is California, the flamingo is abundant at Mono Lake at one time of year, the hatching of the saw flies by the millions.
For 10 months out of the year, the Eared Grebe is flightless, the longest period for any bird capable of flight. [Probably still trying for reservations on Pam Am.]
And on cold mornings (and there are plenty of those at Mono Lake), this grebe raises its rump toward the sun to warm up. It's darkest feathers are on its rump. I wonder if we could tell time by the positioning of its rear end.
Small fry small catch.......
This Little Egret may of only been catching small ones but lots of them........
