Thirsty..
Female moose drinking water on a foggy morning at Grand Teton National park.
(I think she was also picking up some grass from the bottom)
From a midsummer morning, the start of a 4 image set. It was difficult to even get out of town that day - when I saw the low mist rolling over this field, I had to stop. I'd been driving for less than two minutes and had just cleared "city limits"...
To most people, grass is grass, but here on the prairie we have many, many species of grass, at least three of which are visible in this photo. And I should know what they are by now, but I don't.
Anyway, this isn't about species so much as sheer beauty. The light, the ground fog, the wet roadside ditch, the fence line, all quite subtle but I was breathless, in awe of the commonplace. After all, it's just a ditch. But Blake saw eternity in a grain of sand...
... more to come!

"Dale" was a railroad station name where Main Three joined Mains One and Two, just west of the summit of Sherman Hill. This westbound freight passes "Dale", behind three SD40-2's (8044-8047-8066), as westbound coal empties wait on Track 3, The coal empties took an easier grade up the hill from Cheyenne and now they cool their wheels to let the three "Fast Forties" scream by on Main Two with about forty cars; the steeper route from Cheyenne didn't pose any problem for them and I have a feeling that there was no "trip optimizer" on that lead unit! The 8000-series SD40-2's were geared higher than the majority of EwePee's vast fleet of EMD's finest: capable of speeds up to 80 mph instead of the usual 65mph. The speed limit was still 70 for most freights; the higher gearing just ensured that the traction motors were less likely to become unwound. There was a fun (but unconfirmed) story that some UP road crossing in Nebraska had a sign posted, warning motorists that trains crossed through at speeds in excess of 70mph, and in smaller lettering, "whether you are on it or not!"
Th light was prettily awful, but the rarity of a trio of CN cowl units was worth recording. CN #509 westbound, running late, is seen passing Pulham Road, east of Komoka behind Dash 8-CMs 2407, 2438 and 2414. #509 runs from London to Sarnia and back, with the power nearly always making the round trip. Unfortunately on this occasion Sarnia did a power swap.
