Liquidamber styracifula 23W45 Sweet Gum F0- (Sweet Gum) Sweet Gum, Mature plant size: 60ft., -, USDA Hardiness Zone 5, Michigan Bloom Month -, In Garden Bed F0 for 20 DAYS (KBK). Planted in 2023.
NC State University: American sweetgum grows in full sun to partial shade in neutral to acidic soil that is moist yet well-drained. It is resistant to fire, heat, drought, soil compaction, deer and rabbits. It may grow 60 to 100 feet tall with a trunk diameter of 4 feet or more. The tree has a shallow root system and should be planted in spring because roots take three to four months to recover from the shock of transplanting. Propagate sweetgum by seed.

Hydrangea quercifolia 'MUNCHKIN' 23W45 Oakleaf R3- (Oakleaf) Dwarf Oakleaf Hydrangea, Mature plant size: 3x3ft., White fading to pink, USDA Hardiness Zone 5-8, Michigan Bloom Month 5, In Garden Bed R3 for 13 MONTHS (Hirts). Planted in 2022.
Song Sparrow: Small statured plant creates a big impact in the garden from its abundant, long lasting, 6-1/2" long blooms that held upright above the foliage beginning in early summer. Hydrangea 'Munchkin' is a selection of our native Oakleaf Hydrangea. Flowers open white and gradually turn medium pink. Striking foliage is dark green in summer; mahogany-red in fall. Compact form and dense plant habit make it ideally suited for use in smaller landscapes.
Size: 2-3' tall, 3-4' wide in 5 years. Plant zones: 5-8.

Hydrangea quercifolia Gatsby Pink® 'JoAnn'. A Proven Winners Oak Leaf Hydrangea. Patented (PP27879, 2017) by Alan Branhagen (Kingsville, MO) and Spring Meadow Nursery Inc. (Grand Haven, MI). The patent abstract claims “A new and distinct cultivar of Hydrangea plant named 'JoAnn', characterized by its loosely upright and outwardly spreading plant habit; strong and sturdy stems; relatively small leaves; freely flowering habit; large showy inflorescences with sterile flowers that are initially white in color and with development become pink to rosy violet pink in color; and good garden performance and winter hardiness.” Maybe the key feature here is the changing color of the flowers?
