Hydrangea paniculata 'Phantom' 23W29 Panicle U2- (Peter Zwijnenburg Jr, Netherlands 1990) Panicle Hydrangea, Mature plant size: 10x8ft., 15in. long sterile florets emerge pale green and mature to bright white to pale pink by early fall, USDA Hardiness Zone 4, Michigan Bloom Week ISO WW28, In Garden Bed U2 for 34 MONTHS (Meijer). Planted in 2020.

Missouri Botanical Garden: 'Phantom' features very large flower heads held on sturdy, straight stems that are not prone to flopping. The terminal, cone-shape, panicle inflorescences can reach up to 15" long and are excellent for fresh cut or dried arrangements. The sterile florets emerge pale green and mature from bright white to pale pink by early fall. Mature specimens can reach up to 10' tall with an equal spread.

Almost Eden: It's quietly whispered among those in the know that this sister seedling to the highly touted Limelight™ may actually be the better of the two, but we'll leave it up to you to decide... Huge clusters of white sterile florets are held above the rich dark green foliage on sturdy upright to arching stems in summer and change to pink and green in fall. A Royal Horticulture Society Award of Garden Merit recipient!

2020 note: good sized potted plant from Meijer in Ann Arbor (Jackson RD). Probably a 2 gallon pot. This one is somewhat taller and wider than most of the recent introductions (this is not a recent intro), so I need to plant it where is will have some room to grow. End of the season sale at 30% off. Tag indicated a height of 10-20 feet, while most web info reported 10 feet at maturety. Purchased in late August, will wait for cooler weather in September to plant. In the greenhouse with the rest of the panicle hydrangeas that get watered daily in this heat.

Hydrangea paniculata 'ZINFIN DOLL' 23W29 Panicle J2- (Wood, 2016) Panicle Hydrangea, Mature plant size: 7ft., Pink, USDA Hardiness Zone 3-8, Michigan Bloom Month 7c, In Garden Bed J2 for 6.1 YEARS (Bluestone). Planted in 2017.

Hydrangea paniculata Zinfin Doll® 'SMNHPRZEP' (PP26956, 2016) was developed by Timothy Wood, MI. Selected from an open-pollination of seed parent Hydrangea paniculata 'Little Lamb'. Dense bi-colored blooms emerge white then transition to hot pink to red. Upward-facing blooms on strong stems. Soil acidity does not affect bloom color. A Proven Winners® selection. Good growth in 2 years time. Great fall colors.

2020 note: About 3 feet tall and wide after 3 years in the ground. Needs to be bottom trimmed to be more vase shaped (my preference). Soil in this garden is on the clay side. Seed parent is Little Lamb, which I had but did not survive. Like most of my panicle hydranges, it starts out white and turn pink or red or both. I will probably keep this at a 3-4 foot height.

First Editions: With a commanding presence in the summer and fall garden, White Diamonds® is an exceptional compact hydrangea with glistening white, upright panicles that eventually fade to lovely parchment and pink colors for dried arrangements. Smaller and more manageable than most H. paniculata, White Diamonds boasts dark green leathery foliage that displays increased heat and drought tolerance. Use as an anchor in the mixed border, plant as a hedge or in a large grouping for a magnificent effect.

2020 note: Compact hydrangea with glistening white, upright panicles that eventually fade to lovely parchment and pink colors. The last one looked healthy then suddenly turned brown and died in 7/2020. A 2 gal potted plant. 2022note: very nice:)

Missouri Botanical Garden: ‘Rensun’, commonly sold under the trade name of STRAWBERRY SUNDAE, typically grows to only 5’ tall and to 3-4’ wide. Flower panicles (7” by 5”) feature showy sterile flowers which bloom on new growth from mid-summer to fall. Sterile flowers emerge white, change to pink and finally mature to strawberry red, with multicolored flowering (white to strawberry red) occurring in late summer as new flowering stems emerge to join mature flowers. This cultivar is very similar to H. paniculata ‘RENHY’ VANILLA STRAWBERRY (French breeder Jean Renault bred both) except it is much smaller in size. U.S. Plant Patent PP#25,438 issued on April 14, 2015.

2020 note: 3 feet high and 4 feet wide after 23 months in the ground. Really pleased so far with this shrub.

Developed by M. A. Dirr (University of Georgia). A cross of Hydrangea macrophylla 'Veitchii' (old Japanese lacecap cultivar) and Hydrangea macrophylla 'Bailmer' Endless Summer® The Original. Flowers on old and new wood. A white-flowered mophead that ages to pink, dark green leaves. It also has an increased resistance to mildew. This was the second hydrangea released under the Endless Summer® trademark (PP17169, 2006).

2022 note: This one has never bloomed. 2023: first blooms hidden and down low. My hydrangeas die to the ground each winter, so I only get blooms on new wood. And, new wood blooms do not seem reliable.

Hydrangea macrophylla 'Endless Summer Blushing Bride' 23W29 Bigleaf Y1- (Dirr, 2006) Bigleaf Hydrangea, Mature plant size: 3x3ft., White, USDA Hardiness Zone 4, Michigan Bloom Month 6, In Garden Bed Y1 for 5.8 YEARS (Lowes). Planted in 2017.

Bachman: DIDDLY DADDY (Bachman 09) 50" 9" M DOR Tetraploid. Bo wrote this one along with Harvey Fuqua, great singer with The Moonglows, in 1956. We love tall strong daylilies and this fits the bill. A dusty rose with darker rose edging above a gold throat, DIDDLY DADDY is an extra large flower holding 29 buds on 4 way branched scapes. It is out of some lines we created using Tet Citrina several years ago with our own cultivars. [COLEMAN HAWKINS X (Tetra Citrina x HELL HATH NO FURY)].

Hydrangea paniculata 'BOBO' 23W29 Panicle J2- (Huylenbroeck 2010) Dwarf Panicle Hydrangea, Mature plant size: 2-3ft., Flowers gradually acquire pink to light purple tones as they mature, USDA Hardiness Zone 3-8, Michigan Bloom Week ISO WW27, In Garden Bed J2 for 4.1 YEARS (Bluestone). Planted in 2019.

Missouri Botanical Garden: 'Ilvobo', commonly sold under the trade name of BOBO, is a compact cultivar that typically grows in an upright rounded mound to only 2-3' tall and to 3-4' wide. It is the product of an open pollination in a controlled breeding program that took place in Melle, Belgium in 2003 between Hydrangea paniculata 'Pink Diamond' (female parent) and an unknown Hydrangea paniculata (male parent). 'Ilvobo' is particularly noted for its dwarf/compact mounded shape, free branching habit, early flowering, strong stems, and conical flowering habit. Abundant sterile white flowers bloom early and profusely in large flower panicles (each to 11" long). Strong stiff stems hold the panicles upright with no drooping. Flowers gradually acquire pink to light purple tones as they mature. Flowers typically bloom from July through September. Ovate, serrate, dark green leaves (to 2 1/2” long) produce generally undistinguished fall color.

2020 note: Produced a bloom after a couple of months in the garden last year. Is about 18 inches high and wide after 14 months in the ground. Garden soil in this area is mostly clay. Not sure what kind of trimming I will do with this shrub. Will check out plant structure this winter. If it maintains a mounded ball shape, I may just leave it. So far, I really like the size. Seems at home in the perennial garden.

Missouri Botanical Garden: Frances Williams' is a popular cultivar that features very large blue-green leaves variegated with irregular greenish-yellow margins. It was discovered by breeder Frances Williams in the mid-1930s. It is a clump-forming perennial that typically matures in a spreading mound to 24" tall, but spreads over time to 48-60" wide. Thick, puckered, cupped, wide-oval to rounded leaves (to 12” long and 11” wide) have distinctive veining, cuspidate tips and cordate lobes. Leaves are deep blue-green in the center with wide but irregular greenish-yellow margins. Funnel-shaped, mostly white flowers appear in early to mid summer in racemes rising to 30" tall. Flowers often have lilac hues.

Per Dirr "Hydrangea paniculata, 'HYPMAD II' has numerous white inflorescences that mature to rose-pink. The sepals turn outward from the inflorescences at maturity resulting in a frilly, lacy appearance. The habit is compact, dense, broad-mounded, 130 cm by 170 cm in 4-years at Athens, Ga. The dark green leaves are insect and disease resistant."

Hydrangea macrophylla 'Let’s Dance Rhythmic Blue' 23W29 Bigleaf F1- (Wood, 2015) Bigleaf Hydrangea, Mature plant size: 3x3ft., Mophead Blue or pink, USDA Hardiness Zone 5, Michigan Bloom Week ISO WW28, In Garden Bed F1 for 4.8 YEARS (Hirt's). Planted in 2018.

Hydrangea macrophylla Lets Dance™ Rhythmic Blue 'SMHMES14' was selected by Timothy D. Wood of Spring Meadow Nursery in Michigan (PP25836, 2015). It's patented as new and distinct. According to the patent, "its upright, outwardly spreading and mounded plant habit; strong and sturdy dark brown-colored stems; early flowering habit; large mophead-type inflorescences with large sterile flowers; sterile flowers dark pink or blue in color depending on aluminum sulfate treatments; and good winter hardiness.”

How new and distinct is it? In reality, most new and old cultivars of big leaf hydrangeas are upright & outwardly spreading & mounding, have stems of color, flower between early and late, have mopped or lacecap type inflorescences, have flowers that are pink or blue depending on soil pH, and have some degree winter hardiness.

'SMHMES14' is an open-pollinated seedling of Hydrangea macrophylla 'Bailmer' (aka Endless Summer®). The unique trait of 'Bailmer' is that it is remontant or re-blooming. Specifically, it blooms on old and new wood whereas most older big leaf cultivars bloom on old wood only. So, if you have a harsh winter or late spring frost that damages buds on old wood, a remontant hydrangea will still flower on new wood in late summer (probably not the stellar display that you wanted, but something). This trait is related to winter hardiness, but it is not exactly winter hardiness. To me, winter hardiness is the winter temperature that a plant can withstand without dying. This trait is only dealing with buds, as in “this Buds for you”.

Getting back to Lets Dance™ Rhythmic Blue, it seems to me that its strong & sturdy dark brown stems (inflorescences do not flop) and winter hardiness sets it apart from other cultivars.
