Acer palmatum 'Wolff' 23W20 Japanese Maple N3- (EMPEROR) EMPEROR Iâ„¢Japanese Maple, Mature plant size: 20x15ft., deep red, USDA Hardiness Zone 5, Michigan Bloom Month -, In Garden Bed N3 for 9.9 YEARS (Wayside). Planted in 2013.
Missouri Botanical Garden: 'Wolff' (Amoenum Group), commonly marketed under the trade name of EMPEROR I, is a moderately-sized red-leaved Japanese maple that typically matures to 15' tall and as wide. Attractive dark purple red foliage in spring and summer turns scarlet red in fall. Each palmate leaf has 5-7 serrate, deeply-cut lobes (divided 3/4 of the way to the leaf base). Lobes are broadest in the middle with long tapered tips.
Dark purple red foliage in spring and summer turns darker red in fall. Leafs out later than others, avoiding frost damage. Grows about the same rate as Bloodgood. Severe die back in 2020. We did not have an unusally cold winter in 2019/20, so I am surprised at the die back of a 7 year old tree.
2021: trimmed back the dead trunk.

Paeonia 'Tranquil Dove' 23W20 xPeony N4- (Saunders /Rogers /Laning, 1995) (2-SL-WH) xPeony Peony, Mature plant size: 20-24in., CREAM & PINK, Short Height, single type flower, 4 in. soft cream overlaid in pink, red filaments, yellow stamens, red stigmas midseason bloomer, USDA Hardiness Zone 3-8, Michigan Bloom Week ISO WW21, In Garden Bed N4 for 31 MONTHS (Solaris). Planted in 2020.
Solaris: Tranquil Dove. Saunders/Rogers. 1995. Herbaceous hybrid. Tranquil Dove is one of the more unique peonies we grow and is irreplaceable in our eyes. The small plants typically grow to about 28 inches, have very sturdy stems and commence flowering in the early part of bloom season. Plants have wide deep green glossy foliage. The flowers are an exquisite soft cream overlaid in pink. The pink shading is darker near the ruffled petal edges. Red filaments, yellow stamens and red stigmas create a gorgeous affect. Flowers are dainty at about 4 inches in diameter and face upward. An extra bonus comes at dividing time; the interior of the roots are a deep lavender color! Fertile both ways. Appears to be most compatible with tetraploids and has produced very interesting seedlings. (Halcyon x self). Very hardy and of easy culture.
American Peony Society: Parentage Halcyon (Halcyon F2). This hybrid is a white, rosy pink overlay single. It has good substance, stamen and pollen. An early flower 20-24 inches in height, good stem strength with 4-5 inch bloom. Small dark green foliage. This plant was a gift to Chris Laning from Silvia Saunders. Registered, and distribution by Caprice Farm Nursery.

Viburnum lentago 23W20 Nannyberry Viburnum J4- (Eastern US Native) Nannyberry Viburnum aka Sweet Viburnum, Mature plant size: 15x8ft., white, USDA Hardiness Zone 2-8, Michigan Bloom Week ISO WW20, In Garden Bed J4 for 8.1 YEARS (Cold). Planted in 2015.
Missouri Botanical Garden: Viburnum lentago, commonly called nannyberry, is a large, upright, multi-stemmed, suckering, deciduous shrub which typically grows to 10-18' tall with a spread of 6-12', but may also be grown as a small, single trunk tree which may reach a height of 30'. Non-fragrant white flowers in flat-topped cymes (to 4.5" diameter) appear in spring. Flowers give way in autumn to blue-black, berry-like drupes which often persist into winter and are quite attractive to birds and wildlife. Ovate, finely toothed, glossy dark green leaves (to 4" long) are abruptly long-pointed. Variable fall color ranges from drab greenish-yellow to reddish-purple.
Adoxaceae family (a-dox-AY-see-ee). A large, upright, multi-stemmed, suckering, deciduous shrub. Favored by Nanny goats. Common in eastern North America. Fruits are edible straight off the bush. Or can be used in jams and jellies. Average soils. Suckering habit, good for naturalizing. I have 2 plants near the backyard south fenceline. Removed old farm fence and cleared area, 2019. Removed Dogwood neighbor in 2020. Trimmed in 2022.

No details available. Column form of sugar maple. Found near Hidden Lake Gardens, Tipton, MI. Purchased from Andy Duvall, Ann Arbor, MI.
The Dawes Arboretum: An upright, columnar selection of deciduous tree from Ellis Parke of Hillsdale County, MI. Ultimate size unknown, probably achieving up to 50' high but only 30' wide. Summer foliage is dark green turning the species' characteristic yellow and orange in fall. Great to use as a specimen or lawn tree where width is limited.
Planted in 2016, it is still quite small in 2021. Still quite narrow with irregular growth patterns. Makes me smile when I walk the gardens.

Allium 'Globemaster' 23W20 ornamental onion E4- (Jan Bijl, 1971) ornamental onion, Mature plant size: 3ft., Purple, USDA Hardiness Zone 5-7, Michigan Bloom Week ISO WW20, In Garden Bed E4 for 6.6 YEARS (MBulb). Planted in 2016.
Missouri Botanical Garden: 'Globemaster' is a hybrid cross between A. christophii and A. macleanii. It is a bulbous perennial that is ornamentally grown for its spring bloom of spherical, deep lavender flower heads. Strap-shaped, gray-green, basal leaves form a clump of foliage in spring. As the leaves begin to wither in mid-spring, stout flowering stems rise to 20-30" tall topped with huge, globular, deep lavender to silver-purple flower heads (terminal umbels to 6-10" in diameter) packed with individual star-shaped florets which collectively display a metallic sheen. Flowers appear in an impressive, long-lasting, spring bloom (May in St. Louis) in which new florets continue to develop as the original ones fade. Flower heads dry after bloom and remain ornamental in the garden well into summer. Flowers generally lack fragrance. I only see 2 of the 3 in 2020. Looking sad in 2021.

Acer saccharum 'Parke' 23W20 Sugar Maple J2- (Ellis Parke of Hillsdale County, MI.) Parke Sugar Maple, Mature plant size: 20ft., Green leaf, USDA Hardiness Zone 3, Michigan Bloom Month -, In Garden Bed J2 for 6.8 YEARS (Duvall). Planted in 2016.
