Deze foto is in meerdere opzichten niet meer te maken: de hier getoonde locs zijn zonder uitzondering allemaal gesloopt, het terrein in Tilburg bestaat niet meer en als dat wel zo zou zijn, was het zeker niet vrij toegankelijk. Op 14 april 1995 kon ik hier echter nog ongestoord rondlopen zonder dat er ook maar iemand kwam vragen wat ik daar deed. Op deze foto staat de NS 2246 zijn verdere lot af te wachten. Rechts staan de 2249, 2330, 2239 en de 1217 die niet veel eerder in onzachte aanraking kwam met een VAM-container.

I was going to create a short series called "Places I'd Rather Be", but the truth is I'm quite happy on the prairie. Still, there are days when I miss the mountains, the forests, and the coast. With travel restrictions currently in place due to Covid, I might not be able to quench my wanderlust this year, so here is a brief virtual visit to a couple of my favourite locations, beginning with Alberta's Kananaskis Country.
Located along the eastern slope of the Rockies, Kananaskis is one of our well kept secrets. The tour buses all go to Banff. Parking lots overflow, tourists pour out and swarm along the shore of beautiful Lake Louise. The wilderness has become a backdrop for selfies. I'm not complaining; if we must sacrifice one place to ensure a little tranquility everywhere else, Lake Louise is as good a choice as any.
Here in Kananaskis, it is possible to escape the crowds, to be alone with one's thoughts - and lenses. When I saw that light in the distant valley bottom, I had to pull over and frame the scene. If I had hiked three days into some remote location and saw this, no doubt it would mean more to me, but three years later I have to recognize the beauty and majesty of this place. Looking southwest into Peter Lougheed Provincial Park. (Why do we name parks for politicians? Don't get me started!) Morning light.

NGC 2246 is an emission nebula in the Monoceros constellation, around 5200 light years from earth.
As expected within an emission nebula, UV radiation from nearby hot stars ionizes the gas in the nebula by stripping away electrons. When these electrons later recombine with the atoms and fall to lower energy levels, they release energy in the form of photons (light), causing the gas to glow with distinct colours.
