Oregon - 2008; Awarded Highly Commended Audubon Society; Cannon Beach is recognized for its well-known landmark, Haystack Rock, towering 235 feet above the surface. Composed of basalt, Haystack Rock was formed by lava flows emanated from the Grand Ronde Mountains 10 to 17 million years ago. Near Haystack Rock are the Needles, two tall rocks rising straight out of the water. Right after the sun set, the sky was lit with this orange, purple glow, which provided a dramatic and beautiful backdrop on this cloudy, rainy day.
