This limestone massif is close to the Spanish border; in fact this image may have been taken from the Spanish side. The landscape of the High Pyrenees is a harsh one: in hot, dry summers and cold winters only the hardiest vegetation survives. The principal tree species are scattered silver fir (Abies alba) and mountain pine (Pinus mugo subsp. uncinata).

An uncommon orchid, growing on calcareous soils at locations in temperate Europe. Only three extant sites in the UK. The name stems from the imagined resemblance of the labellum to a human shape with military tunic buttons and the overarching petals appearing to be like the hat of an eighteenth-century soldier. On the slopes of the Latemar range (2842m) in the Dolomites, this small alpine lake with vivid colours is fed by snow melt, and has been admired by artists for over a century. The name probably comes from the German Kar, meaning a depression high in the mountains, equivalent to a corrie in Scotland. From a slide taken in 1967.
