Part 3 of 3: Badger and Coyote have settled down and turned their attention to the photographer, who has by now slithered out of his rolling red Toyota blind and is crawling through the snow and mud toward them. Coyote wasn't putting up with that. She made a quick exit, stage right, keeping a wary eye on the intruder. How close did Badger allow me to approach? Tune in tomorrow.
As for the mutual tolerance of these two predators for each other, this is the most companionable moment I've seen (we're talking species now, not individuals). They have a long, well documented association as hunters, one often following the other on their rounds, and there must be mutual benefit from this or it would not happen. I've witnessed this behaviour on many occasions. But I've never seen two hanging out like this - very close and relatively calm. Nature continues to surprise me.

Things get a little testy on the prairie dog mound! Coyote edged in close and Badger finally snapped at her, digging those huge claws in to spray loose earth in all directions; Coyote reciprocated with a snap, and that was all. A little spat, over in three seconds. No contact. Nothing serious.
Was Badger protecting a kill? I don't think so - or rather, not at that very moment. Was Coyote testing for weakness? Maybe, but she probably knows that badgers are fierce little critters, easily able to hold their own vs the trickster. I may be wrong, but I suspect Coyote was just having a little fun while testing the limits of Badger's tolerance. It has been my view for a long time that badgers take everything seriously while coyotes find everything amusing. I know, I know. Anthropomorphizing. The real problem may be that we don't have words that describe the motivations of another species, about which we can only guess. We are stuck with the limited spectrum of human emotional response descriptors. Something may be going on that is beyond our vocabulary. Intelligent animals such as the coyote experience the world very differently from us; they are subtle, not mechanistic, and just as their thoughts are coyote-thoughts, their emotional world is also coyote in nature. I don't want to deny them a broad range of experience. We gaze upon them across an unfathomable gulf of mystery.
More to come...

When you finally go back to your old home, you find it wasn't the old home you missed but your childhood.

The Colour of Winter, Part V, for lichen lovers everywhere. Some great things about lichens: 1 - they are as colourful as wildflowers; 2 - you can find them in winter as well as summer; 3 - the ones that grow on rocks don't move, so it doesn't matter if the wind is blowing; 4 - rock lichens often grow on flat or nearly flat surfaces, so all you have to do is stop down to f/16 or smaller and most or all of your subject will be in focus; 5 - you don't have to worry about backgrounds (again referring to rock lichens), just find a pleasing configuration; 6 - they're everywhere; 7 - they can live for thousands of years, so if you mess up the shot all you have to do is find that rock and try again; 8 - most photographers don't bother with them, so the competition is nil; and 9 - they're often very beautiful.
The down side for some is that to get a TOP quality photo, you have to use a tripod. A tripod allows you to stop your lens way down for maximum depth of field without worrying about the shutter speed. Using a tripod is the only way to achieve the ideal combination of small f-stop, slow shutter, and low ISO. If you don't, image quality will be compromised, either by insufficient depth of field, unintentional blur, or digital noise. Admittedly, these problems are not as great as in times past. In particular, modern sensors in high end cameras are so good - and noise reduction software is now so sophisticated - that you can get a good result at higher ISO settings. But for the BEST quality, without compromise, you still need to tick those three boxes. Oh, and you'll need a decent macro lens, too!
So, to summarize: sturdy tripod, good macro lens, low ISO, stop down the aperture. In addition, I use a cable release and lock my mirror up before exposure to eliminate vibration from mirror slap. Those with mirrorless cameras can skip this step. Of course, you have to be able to see and compose, too :-)

Last shot in the coyote-badger set. After giving a long and really LOUD howl - see the two previous shots - she trotted away, presumably to reconnoitre with another pack member, and then returned to casually stroll past me at close range. I was still shooting from my car. This took place before she cozied up to the badger, and before I slithered through the melting snow and mud for close ups. Stories don't have to be told in chronological order; see Tarantino's Pulp Fiction (for example).
Mid-winter is a tough time to try photographing wildlife on the northern prairie, so I am eternally grateful for this hour spent with two prairie predators.
