Often times, this is what I do at late night… whenever I feel frustrated, bored or wanted to get some night air… just to refresh, free my mind and get ready for the next morning. I found the city at night in different dimension and light streams fascinating.
Here is my favorite route … one of the most winding freeway in US, the 110 FWY.

Remember when Average Joe Railfan's only hope of catching something worthwhile was just by virtue of showing up? I recently lucked into just such a morning of "old-school" railfanning.
With nary a "Heritage Units dot com" report, Facebook sighting, nor other railfan-network-inside-scoop-heads-up, I stumbled across NS 20T running under the abandoned C&NW bridge at Curran, IL, led by Reading heritage SD70ACe 1067. Better to be lucky than good I guess...at first glance, I thought it was a UP leader.
That paint surely needs some touching up, but I figure this unit's next trip to the paint booth will result in a new coat of the black and white...or the scrapper's torch.

Ruim voor de overweg komt het autootje tot stilstand. Met een gewicht van 580 kilogram heeft de in Oostenrijk gebouwde auto de net gepasseerde brug over de Romaubach beslist niet te zwaar belast. In tegenstelling tot het Italiaanse voorbeeld had deze Oostenrijkse variant van de Fiat 500 een 16 pk boxermotor die in het lokale heuvel- en berglandschap prima voldeed.
Ook "Gepäcktriebwagen" 2091.09 is een Oostenrijks product. Met bouwjaar 1938 is de locomotief aanzienlijk ouder dan de klassieke auto.

NS 8114 leads eastbound train 20T past BE Tower in Berea, Ohio on a beautiful Summer morning. This Kansas City-Harrisburg train can frequently be seen around this time of the day amid the parade of morning eastbound mail trains on the Chicago Line.
20T coasts through downtown Decatur with NS 8098 (Conrail) in charge. It's nice that older buildings, such as the ones here at Water St., still stand and call back to a time when Decatur was a thriving industrial/agricultural center.
While I prefer the WB shot at Lanesville, IL, I've enjoyed trying to make the EB shot work as best as possible. A few months prior, I shot the S&A heritage motor also leading 20T, but on a dreary day. I figured I would try again once an opportunity presented itself.
Earlier this week, the 8098 led 255 west across the Lafayette District and DH Line, which I regrettably missed. Thankfully the unit was spun in KC and placed on the front of 20T for a return trip east two days later. Running slower than normal, I was able to shoot Big Blue four times between Dawson and Decatur. The second shot of the chase displays a common theme for this stretch of the DH Line: railroad tracks on a high fill and the parallel Old IL-36 changing elevation in accordance with the terrain.
After 4 years of keeping my eye on the weather, the sun's movement back and forth between the northern and southern hemisphere, and the NS supplying a train at the right point in time, it all came together the evening of 01/10/22. NS 20T pulls out of the Wabash River valley east of Lafayette, IN. Purdue University is silhouetted on the other side of the Wabash River valley in the upper right of the photo.
The tide of retirements seems relentless. Signals on both the Southern-West and Brooklyn Districts are getting axed, as evidenced here at Raymond, IL.
NS 20T hustles north to Decatur past some iconic Wabash signals I figured would be around for at least a year or two more.
NS 20T crosses the former Illinois Central in Tolono, IL after waiting on the main for train 122 which can be seen to the right.
NS 120 sits stopped on the main awaiting the arrival of NS 122 from the East. Train 20T was also stopped behind NS 120 at the Tolono diamond.
The goal was to shoot one of the roadrailers out here but unfortunately, 256 who was supposedly in Decatur, IL never showed.
Sumas Mountain, lush green and forested, dominates the background while a number of dairy farms, ubiquitous to this region, dot the valley acreage and give off that sweet, unmistakable aroma of "dairy air" as the M-EVESUM1-20T rolls into town with 88 cars for customers both here and across the international border to the north in Canada.
Another fine trip up the former Northern Pacific line in the books.

Both days we were here the 258 (Old 20T) was a small stack train in the morning eastbound. Here 258 is poking along following 256 into Decatur. This is a Kansas City, MO, to Rutherford, PA, daily intermodal train.
NS 20T passes through the sleepy little community of New Waverly, IN during the evening of 08/13/16.

The M-EVESUM1-20T rocks rhythmically from side to side as it crosses Smith Creek and continues north at MP 113.7 on the Sumas Sub. In the foreground, a tree branch has fallen on the right-of-way, a common occurrence on this route lined with trees on both sides for the majority of the subdivision. During stormy weather, trains traversing this route routinely hit more sizeable trees that have fallen foul of the mainline.
According to some maps, (although I'm not yet positive on the matter), the headend of the train in this shot north of Deming, WA is almost exactly on top of the location where the Milwaukee Road's spur from Kulshan (east of Deming) crossed this Northern Pacific route, continued west, crossed the Nooksack River, and curved up to join the Milwaukee's route from Bellingham to Sumas in the small town of Goshen.

Dirt-encrusted SD70ACe 1168 leads stack train 20T under the old Chicago & Northwestern bridge at Curran, Illinois.
Thanks to massive amounts of summer morning ionospheric skip, ATCS Monitor showed this train coming when it was over an hour west of Springfield. This gave me ample time to shower and eat breakfast before heading west of Springfield to get this shot. If it was only this easy to catch eastbound trains all of the time.

A very short Monday version of 20T meanders eastward on the Lafayette District, following on approaches behind the 13J through Tolono, IL.
Right on the tail of NS 20T, NS 146 coasts east through Philo "The Center of the Universe" with a C40-9 and SD40-2 pair.
After 4 years of keeping my eye on the weather, the sun's movement back and forth between the northern and southern hemisphere, and the NS supplying a train at the right point in time, it all came together the evening of 01/10/22. The last sunlight of the day glints off eastbound NS 20T's locomotives and containers at Buck Creek, IN. I have been waiting a long time for this photo opportunity where a train arrives in time for the the setting sun glint. The freshly fallen snow from the day prior is icing on the cake.
The Monongahela Heritage unit leads NS Train 20T off the east Approach for Merchants Bridge and through a switch at SH Tower while traveling on the TRRA Merchant's District. From here it will swing north towards WR Tower where it will get on the NS (ex-Wabash) Brooklyn Sub for Decatur and points east.

Four BNSF and NS GE's lead feed train 48T west at Hazel Dell. The train will get stopped at KC Junction to wait for the broken rail at milepost 426.1 to get repaired, then proceed to New Berlin to meet 20T and 256.
