In January 2016 Channel 4 screened a documentary ‘The Mad World of Donald Trump’. Earlier TV documentaries on Trump include ones that have been criticised by the Trump Organization. In Matt Frei’s 2016 Channel 4 documentary longstanding critic of “the Donald” Dr Martin Ford ( an Aberdeenshire Councillor) was interviewed near Trump’s “best in the world” Scottish Menie golf course This notorious development unnecessarily impacted on designated dunes of arguably priceless value and high ecological interest in Aberdeenshire.

 

An article in the Press & Journal of July 3 2008 illustrated the site of a “transplant failure” scathingly crticised by Jonathan Hughes of the Scottish Wildlife Trust as an “abject disaster”. Independent scientists warned from the outset it had extremely low probability of any success. The manner in which Trump’s golf course controversially received planning permission that involved high level intervention was highly unusual.

The Sunday Herald reported on 17 January 2016 that the initiator of a petition in the UK against Donald Trump has been threatened by violence see: www.robedwards.com/2016/01/anti-trump-campaigner-threaten... .

Trump has attacked respected conservation charity the RSPB ( see eg: www.heraldscotland.com/news/13075802.Trump__charity_shoul... ) Conservation organisations have all along seen through claims on behalf of the Trump organization such as the one by George Sorial “Mr Trump’s right hand man” who described plans for the Aberdeenshire golf course as being “..to create the best links championship course in the world and implement innovative environmental enhancement to preserve the SSSI for future generations.”(Press & Journal 19 May 2008). Few national politicians initially opposed Trump’s Aberdeenshire golf course. However Scottish Green Party MSP Patrick Harvie at least warned that unprecedented Scottish ministerial intervention on the golf course “had huge implications for future developments in Scotland and risks completely undermining our democratic system of planning control” . At the time Harvie also warned that the Scottish government seemed to be “over-stepping its authority in relation to a local planning matter which is properly determined locally” (article by Cameron Brooks in the Press & Journal ). Then Scottish Finance Secretary John Swinney with overall responsibility for planning matters decided to support the initially rejected environmentally damaging development that predictably failed to deliver extravagant promised benefits.

BSCG has an archive of local Scottish press cuttings on Trump. Critics of the decision by the SNP’s John Swinney to call in the Trump golf course application in December 2007 point out that it was reported that he did this because the application was of national importance. However for months before the two Aberdeenshire Council committees considered the application, when it was of no less national importance, he took no action to call it in. The call in decision John Swinney took in December 2007 would have been illegal interference had it not been for the technical detail that the applicant had not yet received the formal notification by the council of a refusal. This technicality had apparently never before been resorted to. The manner in which it was resorted to raised suspicions that the Council had been in collusion with the central Scottish government and raises questions why the Council dragged its feet for two days given that the applicant would have had electronic mail and fax.

 

Shockingly John Swinney, minister in charge of the call-in, visited the Trump resort in the USA only a week before he called in the planning application, his excuse for this appears to have been lame and this inappropriate visit called into serious question his impartiality as minister in charge of the call-in. It emerged that while the Trump organisation did not pay for the US visit it was paid for by Visit Scotland & Scottish Enterprise who would have done this in the full knowledge that the national statutory body for conservation and outdoor recreation and access SNH were opposed to the golf course development because of damage to a nationally important SSSI (designated site of Special Scientific Interest).

Samuel was born 1880and was a Farmer within the area, he first enlisted in 1902 at age 22 as No:1384 as part of the Territorial Force of the 1st/1st Staffordshire Yeomanry - he is described with a height of 5ft 7inches with a fresh complexion, dark brown hair and brown eyes.

 

His first enlistment which started on 7th April 1902 signing the document at Shelton and each year he would attend each annual training camp sadly not mentioned within his records - he was promoted to Corporal 27th Feb 1907 and he discharged 31st March 1908

 

He continued and re-engaged on the 9th April 1908 again signing at Shelton and continued with the annual camps, 1908 Henley, 1909 Trentham, 1910 Croxton Park, 1911 Keele Park, 1912 Barton in Needwood, 1913 and 1914 are not mentioned.

 

He embodied for overseas war service on 5th August 1914 and shortly afterwards on 3rd December 1914 was promoted to Sergeant and most of their training took place in training at Diss, Norfolk. The regiment was ordered to join the Egyptian Expeditionary Force in 1915, sending 1/1st Staffordshire Yeomanry (Queen's Own Royal Regiment) to participate in the Sinai Palestine Campaign at the last minute. embarking at Southampton on 27th October arriving at Alexandria Egypt on 19th November 1915, Samuel was sent home 22nd March 1916 under the order of "Time Expired" aboard H.T Tunisian and was discharged in Stafford on 14th April 1916.

  

Samuel decided re-enlist once again on 24th June 1916 as No:4448 North Staffordshire Regiment, sadly only to be placed under Army Reserves as his age been 36 and that his time was expired but as the war grew longer and more men need he finally was mobilized on 14th March 1917 as No:203990 and was immediately promoted to Sergeant on the 17th March 1917 and posted to the 2nd Battalion at HQ based at Whittington Barracks in Lichfield on 26th March, then to the 3rd Battalion on the 5th June at Wallsend, North Tyneside and then proceeded to France embarking at Folkstone 22 January 1918 and Dis-embarking at Calais a day later and reporting to No:12 Infantry Base Deport for orders to join which ever Battalion needed him, on the 2nd Feb 1918 he was posted to the 8th battalion and joined the them in the field on the 16th - the war diaries mentions heavy attacking from the enemy on the 12th April in the areas of Wulverghem and Lindenhoek, sadly Samuel was reported missing and his body was never recovered he is remembered on the Tyne Cot Memorial in Belgium and also remembered on a family grave in Burslem cemetery - he was awarded the 1914-1915 Star, British War Medal and the Victory Medal, his wife Florence Louisa who resided at 7 Buxton Street, Sneyd Green would have received these medals along with the death plaque and the kings scroll.
