Elk of Benezette
Elk, also known as Wapiti or Red Deer, enjoy large populations in North America, primarily in western parts of the United States and Canada. These large relatives of deer are also found in smaller populations in other parts of the world, in protected native groups or introduced populations. Their preference for open woodlands and a range of elevations make many states habitable for elk, though their current range is much smaller than their historical range.
Elk in the United States
The western U.S. and Rocky Mountain regions make up the bulk of the elk range in the United States, though some populations exist farther east. Significant populations are found in Washington, Oregon, California, Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Nevada, Colorado, Utah, Arizona and New Mexico, such as in Yellowstone National Park and the Wyoming National Elk Refuge. Smaller pockets of elk can be found in various Midwestern states, such as South Dakota and Minnesota, and small populations have been established in eastern states including Pennsylvania and Kentucky.

I know this might not seem like much, but it means a lot to me. I am from Texas, and my family was that family people in NM and CO love to make fun of. We were able to go ski for a few days once a year. We didn’t have the greatest outdoor clothes (I definitely remember skiing in jeans on some of those warm days), and I’m sure we carried our skis in a goofy way. We usually went to Crested Butte or Purgatory because my dad knew someone who owned a condo there.
I would take the trail maps home and study it for a year. I would look at the trails, figuring out what I’d skied and what I wanted to ski the next year.
I’ve been honored to have my photos published in many places, but seeing my photo on the cover, and in other sections, of the trail map just hits a little differently.
It’s a real honor to be in a position to have my photos represent Taos Ski Valley.
Taken at Nuit - Join the rave!
Thanks to Nirea Mercury and staff for an amazingly hedonistic Halloween event last night. The venue & lighting effects were spectacular!
Feel free to tag people if you were there!!
Beer and bread making was described in several scale models found in graves. In the foreground of the scale model is a man his knees grinding grain against a saddle-shaped grindstone and behind him another kneading bread dough. The one behind it may also crumble the bread into a beer bowl, as the processes look the same. There has probably been a small bread oven in front of the seated person, which he has loosened with a fan.

Kingfisher,
The Kingfisher is found near fresh water of most types including streams, rivers, canals, laker and marehes. It prefers clear, slow-flowing waters. In winter it is often seen on tidal estuaries, salt marshes and rocky sea-shores. It feeds mainly on small fish such as Minnows, Sticklebacks and Gudgeon. It also takes crustaceans ( an important part of the diet in winter ), frogs, tadpoles and large insects. It catches its prey by sitting on an exposed perch overlooking the water and plunge-diving when prey is sighted, It will aiso hover for short periods above the water looking for prey. Kingfishers are highly territorial, especially dueing the breeding season, and are aggressive towards other Kingfishers that stray into the territory.
The nest-site is usually in a hole in the bank of a stream or lake, though sometimes it is a considerable distance from water. A tunnel 1-3 feet long is excavated, ending in a bowl-shaped chamber which contains the eggs. No nest material is used but the nest becomes lined with regurgitated fish-bones. Both sexes share in incubation and care of the young.
The Kingfisher is mainly resident and sedentary, though birds from the northern part of the range move southwards or to sea-coasts when fresh water freezes in winter,.
