Taken July of 2015 near Grand Valley State University. I talked to the land owner of this property and he gave me permission to take photos on his property anytime that I wanted. He had told me this in late June and then by the fall he had sold the property and there was a church being constructed on the site.

What the hell.....

Me observing the stunning night sky above. The Milky Way was totally visible! You don't see this sky back home! Pic taken from around the Union Valley Reservoir, at the Wolf Creek Campground side. This was during our annual family camping trip here. (Tuesday evening, July 21, 2015; 10:12 p.m.)

Summary of our annual family camping trip:

It was finally that time of year again! This year, we went to Wolf Creek Campground located around the Union Valley Reservoir in the Eldorado National Forest. Our camping trip was from July 19-22, 2015. We went at a (perfect) time when t-storms were forecasted for the Sierra Nevada mountain range! Afternoon t-storms have drifted into the region, offering some of us a rare moment to swim in the lake in the rain! Swimming in the lake...while all you hear is occasional thunder and rain drops on the lake's surface...was an experience to remember! Our campground was close to the lake which was nice. Throughout the majority of our time here, we pretty much went down to the lake and enjoyed the scenic views. We had other activities and games back at camp but relaxing by the lake was the biggie. During the evening hours, some of us went stargazing by the lake. It was pitch black so we could see all the stars and even the Milky Way! On our last evening, only some of us (me included) saw a bear eating our food at our campsite! I've never been so scared in my life lol. Surely, this year's camping trip was indeed for the record books! Safe travels out there guys.

Something a little different this past weekend, I did not take a single photos. I had to search though my archives to come up with a photo to post.

I had quite the busy and fun weekend as it started out by being invited (John and Laura) down to Saugatuck for a sunset boat cruise and dinner and Ice cream. The sunset was a bust but time with friends was wonderful. Saturday morning/afternoon Denny and I played in a pickle ball tournament in Lake Odessa. We made it all the way to the gold medal match but lost two games to one and took home the silver. Then Saturday evening Kari and I went out to dinner in Holland and more Ice cream with Denny, Brenda, Terry and Marcia. Very good time talking and eating dinner with friends.

Sunday morning I usually take a walk through Grand Ravines North Park with Lee but Kari thought that we should take an early morning walk with Tucker before church, so no photography in the park that morning. But we did have a lovely walk together and it was a great way to start a Sunday morning. After church I attempted to play a little more pickle ball with Joe, Nate and Bruce but the rain came in as we were just ready to start. Then in the evening my daughter Monica and her soon to be husband Kody came over for chips and cheese. Had a very nice time with them just sitting on the front porch talking.

So after a long weekend I sat on the front porch by myself with my camera bag ready to go do the sunset only to see thick clouds roll in and blanket the sun.

Even though no photos were taken this weekend, I would have to admit it was still a great weekend.

BEWARE - Blobby star images!

This is another example of what happens when thin, high haze covers the sky with an otherwise invisible cloak that becomes visible only in long exposure photographs: The stars turn into extended blobs, rather than the pinpoints that they should be when the sky is clear.

Compare this view with an image made on June 27 last year with the same 400 mm lens, which shows the smaller star images when the sky conditions are very good:

Visually with the unaided eye, or in binoculars or a telescope, the distinctively-shaped North America Nebula (left), and the Pelican Nebula just to its right, appear as faint white clouds in the middle of our Milky Way galaxy. Long exposures with a digital camera sensor reveal the red glow of hydrogen gas, however, especially with Nikon's new red sensitive D810a camera.

This evening in the park was foggy and steamy, with dew settling quickly on exposed lens and telescope parts. As well, the Moon set very late (after 01.30 in the morning), so I had only two hours to capture all of the frames for this image, and three others that I wanted to get, before morning twilight started to appear in the eastern sky. This image, showing more than 34,000 stars, is the result.

This is a large and quite faint emission nebula and star forming region over 100 light-years across, located about 2,400 light-years away in the constellation Cepheus. It is energized by the bright, bluish central multiple star. The very small Elephant’s Trunk nebula (IC 1396A) is inside the dark elongated globule just to the lower left of the centre of the bright gas cloud.

From one web site: "The brightest star (38,000 times brighter than the Sun) ... [at the lower left edge of the nebula] is mu Cephei. It is a red supergiant star with a diameter larger than the orbit of Saturn, some 2536 times the diameter of the Sun. It is one of the largest stars we know of. Also called Herschel’s Garnet Star, mu Cephei is a variable star that varies in magnitude from 3.4 to 5.1 over a period of approximately 730 days."

At the upper left edge of the frame is part of a large, faint reddish nebula called the "Flying Bat" (also known as Sh2-129).

Near the left edge is the bright star Alpha Cephei (also known as Alderamin), which is the brightest star in the constellation Cepheus. It has 2.3 times the diameter of our own Sun, and is 17 times as bright.
