I wish you all a nice first week of May

-----------------------------

Dunkle Wolken, Regen, Kälte und Sturm -

So begrüßte uns der 1. Mai

Ich wünsche Euch allen eine schöne erste Maiwoche!

For a moment, I believed

I know, I was foolish

I've been dreaming about it for a long time

In the park it breaks out suddenly... Tree with Hearts ♡

It slept in my Dreams…

~

Na chvilku jsem uvěřila

Vím, byla jsem pošetilá

Vždyť jsem o tom dlouho snila

V parku naráz vyloupne se... Strom se Srdíčky

Spal v mých Snech...

Lovely evening @ Glanteenassig Lake

Lily of the valley

Les muguets des bois

These little flowers, growing in a shady place at the bottom of our garden, were very early this year. Lily of the valley may look sweet and innocuous but in fact all parts of the plant are poisonous.

- found growing down by the shed in the corner of the garden

- in flower in very good time for 1st May

very many thanks for all your visits to my photostream

The first time I've had Lilies of the Valley with Granny's Bonnets in with them. Usually you get a rose or just the Lilies. A 1st May tradition in France and given to me this morning by Graham.

..there was a time when May 1st was really a labor day...

1st May 2020:

Rather an odd day here today, lots of little things to do and a major one that Graham did, but it left me with little time to take a photo for today.

Although it was sunny, it was also rather windy and a bit on the chilly side, but Rufus decided that he wanted some outside time, so we sat out for a bit with him and Izzy.

Today is also : Global Love Day - nationaldaycalendar.com/global-love-day-may-1/

And the Silly News is : National Mother Goose Day - nationaldaycalendar.com/days-2/national-mother-goose-day-...

It's also May Day or La fête du travaille (in France), but there is no-one selling the usual Lilies of the Valley this year.

Siskins returned to the garden today

1st May 2017:

It's been so windy today that almost nothing was staying still, other than anything heavy enough to withstand the gale.

(I hasten to add that anyone from Brittany would probably call it a light breeze)!

But, the sun did make an effort so I rushed out to see what I could take for today's picture. By the time I crossed the road the sun had gone and the light was just flat and although I took some lovely cheerful photos they aren't that great.

I first noticed the logo on the back of this Audi and took a shot of it, but then saw the one on the radiator grill which looked far better in a photo.

Also Happy May Day to everyone.

1st May 2021 :

Couldn't think of what to make for our Bank Holiday treat, so bought an instant cake mix instead.

It took me longer to get the liquid ingredients out of the "squeezy" container than it did to make our Easter cake from scratch.

I just hope it tastes OK, we'll be trying it later.

I shall endeavour to keep up this evening, but I managed to poke my glasses (the "arm") in my eye earlier today and it's rather sore.

Today is : La fête de travail and May Day, but also : Global Love Day - nationaldaycalendar.com/global-love-day-may-1/

And as for our Silly News it's : National Scrapbook Day - nationaldaycalendar.com/national-scrapbook-day-first-satu...

WCL eastbound ore behind SD40-2, two SD45 (6005-6631- ? ) meets westbound ore empties in siding behind SD40-2, SD45

(6006….) The anticipated ore train showed up and rushed by on newly rehabbed track and new CTC signals. This country is extremely marshy and the signal folks had a devil of a time keeping the things upright! The signal shown is the westbound signal on the main (WC was east-west like the Soo Line until shortly before the CN takeover, when it became north-south.) A good friend and soon to be my conductor later this year, Jason (John and Don both know who I'm talking about) told me that they were proceeding eastbound on an "Approach" signal to the eastbound absolute here - the signal presently behind me - and found NO signal, at least not one that was standing. Jason said it had tipped over into the ditch, and I recall he said that the signal was still Red over Red, just underwater in the ditch. The dispatcher talked his train by the "submerging" (instead of "diverging") red signal. The 6006 in the lead of that ore empty in the siding was my Christmas present later that year, freshly painted at the former Algoma Central shop in the Sault, Ontario. Since the former ACR shop there had a well equipped and environmentally approved paint shop, WC had started doing repaints there. After its fresh dress was applied, it made a trip to Fond du Lac and became my lead unit on the T009 from there to Wisconsin Rapids. Inside and out it was just like new, and I wanted to build a spur track from the main to my house about two blocks away so I could store it there! My conductor thought I had flipped, but that was nothing new to him.

G has bought me some Lilies of the Valley for the 1st of May, almost every year; or up until 2020 when Covid hit us all.

Since then, I've missed out, or until today, when he bought me a little bouquet of them. Sadly, they're in their own tiny tube like vase and have almost more leaves than flowers. Still pretty though, and it's the thought that counts.

So to celebrate the 1st of May, I made a collage from previous years.

Happy May Day, everyone.

Always you have been told that work is a curse and labour a misfortune.

But I say to you that when you work you fulfil a part of earth's furthest dream, assigned to you when that dream was born,

And in keeping yourself with labour you are in truth loving life,

And to love life through labour is to be intimate with life's inmost secret.

A grey afternoon on the 1st May 2021 and due to engineering works on the West Coast Main Line the Daventry – Scotland services are on divert via the Erewash Valley and East Coast Main Line. DRS 88008 Ariadne and 68016 Fearless head south at Stapleford working 4M27, 05:49 Mossend - Daventry.

Early on a Spring evening a northbound Katy freight arrives at this division point, with 96 cars + caboose behind two GP40's and a GP9. The spindly looking Court Street viaduct is still protected by "telltales" to warn any brakemen riding the tops of the cars that their head is in danger of being lopped off, but by this time such practices were quickly disappearing. A typical - up to these times - cast iron sign, white with black trim, warns "Trespassing Forbidden", but I never recall a hostile reception in any Katy facility.

I'm not trying to say that everybody wants to go

I fell in love at the seaside

I handled my charm with time and slight of hand

Do you want to go to the seaside?

I'm not trying to say that everybody wants to go

I fell in love at the seaside

She handled her charm with time and slight of hand, and oh

But I'm just trying to love you...

Wow the highest score on Explore was #25! So nice :)))

A hundred times every day I remind myself that my inner and outer life depend on the labours of other men, living and dead, and that I must exert myself in order to give in the same measure as I have received and am still receiving.

Best seen on black, so hit the "L" key

This is the view from one of the many windows on the 72nd floor of The Shard. The great thing about this floor compared to the 69th (floor below) is that there is only one pain of glass between you and the outside. Which means if you were to get right up close you'll be able to eliminate reflections. However on the 69th you have two pains of glass between you and the outside and theres a good 3-4 inch gap between each piece of glass which creates horrible reflections even when you press the lens right against the glass. Anyway in this case I didn't try to eliminate the reflections, I kind of liked them, as they didn't seem to encroach on the city's architecture just the sky which was pretty hazy anyway.

The jacket looks interesting...

Nottingham NET tram 206 enters Butlers Hill tram stop as it heads up the Leen Valley to Hucknall, 1st May 2009. To the right of the tram is the Network Rail Robin Hood single line.

WCL conductor Ken Schommer (left) and dispatcher John Leopard (right) in front of westbound ore empties in siding behind SD40-2, SD45 (ex-ACR 6006 in lead.) John and I had a common day off and went up to Ladysmith to catch the local that switched the Flambeau copper mine there (remember that, WC folks and fans?) and then made the trip to Barron and back, with a side trip on the Rice Lake branch. Wow, did we do all that? The roadswitcher for the Ladysmith local was another ex-C&NW GP30 in WC paint, just as that local had a year later when I captured it as shown in the previous posting. The railroad had the direct route from Stevens Point to Ladysmith - about a hundred miles - while the roads were anything but a straight shot, and if you wanted to catch any action on the Superior mainline, you had to zig zag back and forth. No chasing was possible as the speeds were at at least 50mph then, I believe. At Sheldon we found the ore empties in the siding and conductor Schommer awaiting rollby duties and, as I recall "JJL" was a new dispatcher for WC, I had the pleasure of introducing John to one of the very finest conductors - and individuals - I ever worked with in my entire career.

A splash of red and yellow for the 1st of May

1st May 2018:

Because of my hiatus hernia I can't have fizzy drinks (or alcohol). Not having alcohol doesn't worry me, or fizzy drinks in general. Other than Coca-Cola, which I'd love to have on a hot day with loads of ice in it. Well, any day really, with or without the ice!

I could drink it, but I'd then end up being in pain and it really isn't worth that. But, Graham likes it and from time to time gets himself some, usually only a couple of cans. But, this time he got 4 bottles and I'm being slowly tortured. Don't worry, I'll get over it - I think!
