In September 1978, while the country was still accessible to tourists, I left with a small group for Afghanistan. At an altitude of 1900 m and far from any agglomeration, in a steep valley at the confluence of the rivers Hari-rud and Jam, I found myself in front of the splendid minaret of Jam. 65 meters high, it is entirely covered with a geometrical decoration in relief with a kufic inscription in turquoise tiles. It would have been built in 1194 by the great Ghurid sultan Ghiyas-od-din (1153-1203).

Since 2002, it is registered by UNESCO on the list of the world heritage in danger. Scientists have not had access to it since 2010.

Typical November weather greeted us in Green Bay back in mid November of 1978, just about 41 years ago. And another typical Green Bay item was running around, switching and working the local industries. We chased the Green Bay & Western 306 for a little bit and wound up catching the modified Alco pulling into Norwood yard with a modeler's dream train. Behind the red RS3m was one of those classic shorty yellow GBW hoppers, loaded of course, then two matching red box cars. Bringing up the rear was another GBW gem, a bay window caboose. The light was dismal but would improve as we headed north for Escanaba. But our subject matter in Green Bay was colorful enough to make up for any weather. My notes show that I was shooting both 64 ASA and 400 ASA at the time, Looking closely at the grain in this shot, I'd have to say that this was the worse of the two, Ektachrome 400. BTW, this is rescan from about six or seven years ago.

On my way back from the French Riviera I came across a field of classic cars. Even though it looks like the cars have been spending some times in the field, the garage is brand new.

One year ago, there was not a single car to be found on this field!

I got the opportunity to photograph freely. There were some amazing cars.

In Canada, the Caravelle first appeared for the 1978 model year as a version of the Dodge Diplomat for Canadian Chrysler-Plymouth dealers. As all Chrysler Canada dealers sold Chryslers, only the top-of-the-line LeBaron was sold in Canada, and the Diplomat and Caravelle did not offer the top line models.

The top of the range Caravalle was approximately $670 cheaper than the LeBaron. In 1983, Chrysler Canada added the E-body version of the Dodge 600, also offering it as a Plymouth Caravelle. The rear wheel drive Caravelle then became the Caravelle Salon, rather than taking the American "Gran Fury" name.

The coupe was dropped after 1986 while sedan production came to an end in 1988.

Blue skies finally poked through the clouds today. This is a picture I've wanted for a while but resisted taking so I could get a blue sky. This is the Edwin A. Ulrich Museum of Art at Wichita State University.

A three car Class 120 “Swindon Cross Country” DMU M50663/59297/50719 arrives at Newark Castle with a Lincoln – Derby service, 13th May 1978.

Unit History

This Class 120 set was built at Swindon during 1958 as part of an order for forty nine sets for Western Region services. In 1969, twenty two sets were transferred from the Western Region to Derby, to replace the less successful Derby based three car Class 105 Cravens units. I am old enough to remember their arrival in the East Midlands and the improvement they brought over the Cravens units. Until the introduction of the class 150 “Sprinter” DMU’s in 1985 these class 120 units formed the backbone of the East Midlands local train fleet. By March 1986 the remaining class 120 vehicles had been transferred away from Derby and by October 1989 the last class 120 vehicles had been withdrawn. W50663 entered service in March 1958, transferred to Derby in May 1969, withdrawn in December 1984 and broken up in April 1985. W59297 entered service in January 1959, transferred to Derby in May 1969, withdrawn in August 1987 and broken up in March 1989, W50719 entered service in April 1958, transferred to Derby in May 1969, withdrawn in October 1985 and broken up in June 1986.
