The nave of the basilica was excavated in the rock and is at a lower level to enhance the presbytery and break the monotony of such a long space. It is divided into four sections, marked by series of large transverse arches, crossed in the vault to form coffered ceilings.
The dimensions of the current temple are greater than those of the original perforation, which was 11 by 11 meters. Now it has a width of 18 meters. The technical difficulties of expanding the tunnel were very great due to the granitic structure of the cliff, with joints that could cause landslides, to the point that the decision was made to solidify the existing tunnel with the debris from the expansion of the floor and sides. and once this is finished and consolidated, proceed to complete emptying. In August 1954, the interior lining was made, with large concreted transverse arches, as well as the sides and the floor, which contributes to the stability of the whole and to the support of the mass of stone that gravitates over the vault.
The walls of the chapels house the remains of thousands of combatants from both sides of the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939).
Yet another gem from my file of vintage truck slides – This one a sparkling, brand new 1954 Chevrolet 3600 series delivery van.
I am certainly no expert on custom truck bodies, but I do know that Chevrolet would have sold a decent amount of chassis/drivetrain/front clip setups to builders like Herman, Boyertown or Grumman who would then turn out finished Dairy, Bread or Laundry delivery trucks just like this.
Some of the neat detail that I noticed on this truck was the large one-piece windshield, single wiper, and a sheet metal extension at the bottom of the front fender that I presume was designed to keep mud and snow from building up on the bottom step by the door that the driver would be in and out of all day long.
I am not sure where this photo was taken, could be at a Chevrolet testing facility or just a parking lot at the truck-body builder itself. – Circa Spring of 1953.

The one-piece windshield with this body style identifies it as a 1954 model, the last model year of this style.
This truck was one of a few parked in front of a furniture store in Mesa, Arizona named Potato Barn.
Established in August 1902. Between 1905 and 1954, the Fairwood School District provided a school in (Old) Warwick, Alta. before the district was incorporated into the the Vegreville School District and the County of Minburn.
Named after Robert Fairbairn and William Woods. Fourteen miles northeast of Vegreville on the Vermilion River. One of the first teachers was Miss M. Kennedy in 1910. On 23 October 1918, the board closed the school because of the Spanish flu epidemic. It reopened on 2 December. In 1919, the board moved that ratepayers serving overseas be given free taxes for the year. Closed in 1954 and the children were bused to Vegreville . The school remained an active community centre for many years. It is still erect today as far as I can tell, but not in use.

Happy New Year 2024. Believe it or not, I took this photo in October of 2023 on the streets of San Terenzo, Italy. She looked so retro that I thought for a moment that she had just walked off the set of a film directed by Federico Fellini in 1954.
This photo has been in Explore on January 1, 2024. Highest position = #51. This is my 203rd photo in Explore.
1954 Ford Crestline 2 -Door Hardtop
The year 1954 was a great year in sales for the Ford Motor Company and its line of passenger cars. The big news, however, was the introduction of Ford's overhead valve V-8 engine sporting 130 horse power. The new innovation replaced the old flathead engine. In 1954, Ford added several new models to its current line of cars, and the auto giant introduced the new models to the public on Jan. 6 of that year. American motorists at the time were very happy with the 1954 Ford model line although the body designs were a re-styled version of the 1952 and 1953 Ford models.
Ford did some pretty cars in the early 50's and the 1954 Ford Crestline 2 door hard top was one of the prettiest. This example we're offering is just stunning in bright red with red and white pleated vinyl interior. 1954 was the first year for the Ford Y-block and this car has the 239 CI 130 HP V8 backed up by the reliable Ford-A-Matic automatic transmission.
Dutch Darrin's last Hurrah, was this "pine tint" green Kaiser Darrin is on California's Highway 1 at speed. Darrin appears to be the first to use fiberglass as a car shell, well before the Corvette, but with production delays, they were shown in final form only 2 months before the General Motor's first sports car.
The convoluted story of Dutch Darrin's association with Kaiser Frazier is fascinating and a short foray through Wikipedia on the Kaiser Darrin is extremely interesting. The Darrin was sold through the Kaiser network only in 1954, but Darrin purchased the unsold cars at a nominal fee, as well as the 50 finished cars that sat for months buried in snow and sold them out of his own LA showroom. This included several that he exchanged the underpowered Kaiser engine with larger supercharged or V-8 engines with a LOT more power, and a few were raced. The story is worth reading, and I liked the description of original car magazine writer's reaction to the odd radiator grill shape as if the "car wanted to kiss you"
SAIL Amsterdam is a maritime event held once every five years in Amsterdam in the Netherlands. Tall ships from all over the world visit the city to moor in its eastern harbour. SAIL Amsterdam 2025 is the tenth edition, and the first one since 2015 as the 2020 event was cancelled. It was one of the main events celebrating Amsterdam's 750th birthday. It was also 50 years since the first SAIL Amsterdam was held.
