On Monday morning, Kenzie the pup and I decided to take a ride out to the Spenceville Wildlife Area located in the lower foothills of the Sierra Nevada Range. Along the the way we crossed Waldo Bridge which spans Dry Creek at the old population center of Waldo Junction.
Waldo Junction, once named Cabbage Patch, actually had a post office that operated from 1898 to 1915. Now there is nothing here but the bridge, and an oak woodland that covers miles and miles of rolling hills.
Kenzie and I decided to stop short of the bridge to snap a few shots, although Kenzie was much more interested in the cattle grazing along the hillsides. This was her first introduction to the bovine species and she didn't know whether they were an animal to be played with or just something to be avoided. Luckily, she chose the latter.

London to Brighton Veteran Car Run 2022. Coulsdon, Croydon. The London to Brighton Veteran Car Run is the world's longest-running motoring event, held on a course between London and Brighton, England. To qualify, participating cars must have been built before 1905. It is also the world's largest gathering of veteran cars. The first edition, "The Emancipation Run" in 1896, celebrated the recently passed Locomotives on Highways Act 1896, which liberalised motor vehicle laws in the United Kingdom.
The run has taken place most years since its initial revival in 1927. It currently takes place on the first Sunday in November, starting at sunrise, about 7:00 AM, in Hyde Park, London, and mostly following the old A23 road to the finish at Brighton – a distance of 54 miles (87 km).

The American five-masted schooner James Pierce photographed brand new in 1901. My colorization of an image in the Library of Congress archive.
The 1664 grt 68.9 X 13.1. m. James Pierce was built in 1901 by Washburn Bros in Thomaston, Maine. Sadly, she was another fine ship without a happy end:
"On November 19th, 1912, the American wooden schooner JAMES PIERCE, on voyage from Philadelphia to Jobos, Puerto Rico with a cargo of coal, was abandoned after a collision with Norwegian steamer FRAM, 600 miles off the Bahamas. The crew of 13 were saved by the FRAM. The JAMES PIERCE was set on fire by her crew as she was a navigational hazard."

The Indian Motorcycle Manufacturing Company was established in the year 1901 in Springfield Ma. This is one of the very few motorcycles that I’ve never ridden. I hear they are great motorcycles and they are Beautiful bikes.
London to Brighton Veteran Car Run 2023 at Merstham, Surrey. Vehicle registration 'RAC 1' driven by a course steward. According to the online entry list this car is jointly owned by the Royal Automobile Club and the Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust.
London to Brighton Veteran Car Run 2024. A French car described as a "Two-seater voiturette". Maybe the older equivalent of the more recent MG Midget or Suzuki Cappuccino.

One of three identical bays to the front of the structure, designed in 1899 and completed in 1901. Unlike the post office I recently photographed in Sligo, also finished in 1901, this building still features a clock. (Good for them.)

The lighthouse in the fortress of Hellevoetsluis is the oldest original and working round lighthouse in the Netherlands. The lighthouse dates from 1822 and is characteristic of the fortress of Hellevoetsluis and its history.
The tower is 18.10m high, is painted cream and has 2 floors. Around the iron lighthouse with copper dome is a cast iron walkway with balustrade, which rests on openwork cast iron consoles. The tower was extensively renovated in 1901 and tiled up to the entrance in 1961. There are a number of round window openings in the tower.
When I took this picture of a tall narrow building on Pittsburgh Street in my hometown of Scottdale, PA it was for sale. A few years later it was gone. I'm not sure of the name or history of the building that is now just an empty space.
The decorative detail incorporated into this historic facade is all that remains of the fanciful tradition of Victorian architecture. 1900 is often considered the end of that era and the beginning of a more modern approach in the twentieth Century.

The ship, built by William Lindbergs Mekaniska Verkstad (Stockholm) in 1863 for Upsala Ångfartygsbolag, was first called Fyris. In 1894 she was sold to Alpha A/S in Moss (Norway) and renamed Alpha. In 1907 she was sold to Härnösand in Sweden. Three years later she was again sold, and converted to a tugboat, with the name Hercules. After over 100 years of service the ship was broken up in 1967.

Today, the frontier en orth-west Pakistan and Afghanistan is a hotly contested arena in the global war on terror. But between 1849 and 1947, it was the location for a series of punitive expeditions by British-Indian forces against the fiercely independent tribesmen of this wild and mountainous region.
A new territory
The North-West Frontier (now a region of Pakistan) became part of British India in the aftermath of the Second Sikh War (1848-49).
Following its victory in that conflict, the British East India Company annexed the Punjab. In doing so, it also became responsible for the frontier regions with Afghanistan, which had been part of the Sikh Empire's territories. This frontier zone remained part of the Punjab until separated into the North-West Frontier Province in 1901.
The North-West Frontier was also divided into a so-called 'settled area' that came under direct British rule, and a largely autonomous 'tribal area' directly adjacent to the Afghan border. This latter zone was free from the trappings of colonial rule, such as courts, police and taxation.
