at Matlock Bath. From www.andrewsgen.com/matlock/pix/matlockbath_jubbridge.htm :-
"In 1887 an iron bridge of 85 feet span was constructed, at a cost of £230, connecting the promenade with Lovers' Walk, and at the same time the Promenade was laid out at a cost of £700[1]". It was made by the Butterley Company and was described by Benjamin Bryan[2] as "a light iron openwork bridge" ... "supported on stone piers".
DuPont expanded its production capacity in Richmond throughout the 1930s due to increased use of cellophane and the introduction of Cordura rayon. Further expansions included facilities for cellulose acetate film and Cordura yarn for car tires. During World War II, the Richmond plant had War Supply Contracts for paper cellophane, cellophane and rayon yarn. These contracts resulted in a wartime peak of 4,450 workers at the Spruance site.
Though DuPont ceased production of rayon and Cordura in Richmond in the 1950s and 1960s, the Spruance site continued to produce cellophane as well as new materials such as Tyvek®, Nomex® and Teflon®. The expansion of Kevlar® facilities in 1980 marked one of the largest capital appropriations in DuPont history. Through the 1990s, DuPont expanded facilities for products such as specialty chemicals. For over six decades, Spruance has been a key site in the development of new films, continuing to adapt to DuPont’s changing needs.
Over 20 years ago I found this little one room Schoolhouse along a rural road in Western Pennsylvania. I often found myself wandering the countryside with a camera in tow exploring and searching for locations and objects to photograph. My first picture of this building was with a Canon Rebel II S with a kit lens and some 35mm film from a department store. Through the years I've always had this location in mind to revisit. Like an old friend, I was pleased to see the building again. Nothing appreciable had changed from what my memory recalls. I'm curious about this school's history and the stories of those that once entered its doors. Maybe this winter will give time to research.
