You may have heard about California's "superbloom" - vast fields and bursts of wildflowers everywhere. Turns out, it's good for the Painted Lady butterfly migration as well. Hundreds, thousands, millions of them are heading from near the Mexican border to our Pacific Northwest. Finally they found my yard, which is just bursting with color. This one lighted on a bloom of sea lavender. Mostly, I see Monarchs come through here, but the Painted Ladies are only occasional and just darned special. I hung in my yard for about an hour today and watched and photographed them as they flitted silently from flower to flower. What a joy indeed.

In de maand april werd er niet alleen in Oostenrijk gehobbyd. Ook dichter bij huis, in de buurt van mijn woonplaats, liet het stralende weer zich voelen. Op de vrijdag voor ons vertrek besloot ik van de gelegenheid gebruik te maken om de Ouigo-trein, die planmatig om 18u38 Brussel-Zuid verlaat, te fotograferen in het gehucht Stéhoux — nog voor ik om 20u verwacht werd op de wekelijkse repetitie van de Harmonie van Zuun.
Rond 18u30 verliet ik mijn huis en reed naar het plekje dat we al jaren kennen, waar Wouter enkele weken eerder nog de Sinterdolomiettrein van Certus in het laatste avondlicht had vastgelegd. Zo spannend zou het voor mij normaal gezien niet worden: met een geplande doorkomsttijd rond 19u was er nog ruim voldoende daglicht.
Maar zoals dat soms gaat, liep het anders dan verwacht. De Ouigo vertrok met een half uur vertraging uit Brussel-Zuid — en dat bracht zelfs mijn repetitie in gevaar, want ik moest nog langs huis om mijn instrument op te halen. Meer dan een half uur speling had ik niet.
Ik hield de NMBS-app nauwlettend in de gaten. Toen de trein uiteindelijk met +29 vertrok, wist ik dat het nét goed zou komen. Om 19u26 passeerde de (in mijn ogen nog steeds prachtige) trein mijn standpunt. Daarna ging alles in een stroomversnelling: spullen bij elkaar rapen, naar de auto, naar huis, instrument ophalen, en door naar Zuun. Uiteindelijk kwam ik één minuut te laat aan — maar nét op tijd om op mijn stoel te zitten toen de eerste noten klonken.

In April, there was more hobbying than just in Austria. The Friday before our trip, the weather near my hometown was beautiful too. I decided to try and photograph the Ouigo train, scheduled to leave Brussels-South at 6:38 PM, in the hamlet of Stéhoux — before my 8 PM band rehearsal with the Harmony of Zuun.
I left home around 6:30 PM and headed to a spot we’ve known for years, where Wouter recently caught the Certus Sinterdolomiet train at sunset. With the Ouigo expected around 7 PM, there was plenty of daylight — or so I thought. The train left Brussels-South with a 30-minute delay, cutting it close for rehearsal since I still had to grab my instrument at home.
Keeping a close eye on the NMBS app, I saw it finally depart with +29. At 7:26 PM, the (still very beautiful) train passed my location. Then it was a quick dash home, pick up my instrument, and straight to rehearsal — arriving just a minute late, but in time for the first notes.

OTC 56 Brussel Zuid - Paris Nord
Op dinsdag 6 juni 2025 trok ik opnieuw richting het zuidelijke deel van lijn 96. In Neufvilles had ik nét de Cobelfret mooi op beeld weten vast te leggen – een fijne meevaller! Intussen was de zon goed doorgebroken, en na een vlotte autorit en een korte wandeling naar het fotopunt in Cuesmes (jawel, mijn allereerste keer daar) begon het wachten op de eerste Ouigo van de dag. Deze verbindt de Franse hoofdstad met België en zou een halfuurtje na mijn aankomst voorbij razen.
Precies op tijd verscheen de trein in de insnijding en passeerde onder de brug van de Rue de Malogne – een perfecte plek om hem vast te leggen. Met die foto veilig op de geheugenkaart wandelde ik tevreden terug naar mijn auto. Er wachtte me nog een ritje van een klein halfuur naar Lobbes, waar nog één laatste trein op het programma stond... maar dat verhaal vertel ik later.

On Tuesday, June 6, 2025, I headed back to the southern part of line 96. I had just captured a great shot of the Cobelfret in Neufvilles! By then, the clouds had cleared and the light had improved. After a smooth drive and a short walk to the photo spot in Cuesmes (my very first time there), I settled in to wait for the first Ouigo of the day — connecting Paris with Belgium and scheduled to pass about half an hour after my arrival.
Right on time, the train appeared in the cutting and passed under the Rue de Malogne bridge — a perfect location for a photo. With the shot safely on the memory card, I walked back to the car and began the short drive to Lobbes. One last train was still on the agenda... but that’s a story for another time.
