The church dates back to 1764-65, and was built by an unknown architect for Empress Elizabeth's chancellor, Count Alexei Bestuzhev-Ryumin, as a parish church for the village of serfs he had brought to St. Petersburg.

It's World Biodiversity Day! I tend to forget about "special" days - last September I even forgot about International Talk Like A Pirate Day - but this one jumped out at me this morning via an email feed from a conservation group. I had planned to upload a Swainson's Hawk today, but changed my mind: let's stick with Beavers for now.
What better animal than the Beaver to symbolize this day? Our history of exploiting them for fur is legendary. They were the first hugely profitable "natural resource" extracted from North America, beginning in the 1600s and reaching a crescendo in the first half of the nineteenth century when beaver hats were the stylish norm in Europe. In Canada, the Hudson's Bay Company built an empire on the back of the Beaver. Extirpated from much of their original range, only the vagaries of fashion saved the North American Beaver from extinction. When beaver hats became unfashionable, the big rodents - with help from conservationists - were able to recover. Their populations today are considered relatively stable, although like all wildlife they remain vulnerable to habitat loss.
Here, an adult guards the burrow entrance while one of the kits works on a branch in the background. Aside from issuing an occasional tail slap warning when we shifted position, the Beavers were remarkably calm in our presence. What a privilege to get to watch them go about their business!

Vandaag 9 juni 2021 zal hoogstwaarschijnlijk de geschiedenisboeken ingaan als de laatste dag dat de Franse diesellocomotieven van de reeks 67400 in België te zien waren.
Treffend was het schitterend weer, alleen was het sneu dat de heenrit los plaatsvond. Er werd alleen nog de laatste set ballast gehaald die in Quenast stond te wachten op vertrek richting Frankrijk.
Nadat ik samen met Wouter (die meer tijd had en ook de beladen terugrit op foto heeft kunnen zetten), de losse locs had gefotografeerd bij het binnenrijden van Hennuyères station, toonde het sein spoedig terug geel-geel. Een teken dat de ER 7445 in aantocht was. Verhuizen was niet echt een optie, dus werd er snel gescheckt of het vanop de brug ook mogelijk was deze trein vast te leggen bij zonnig weer. Het antwoord was "ja" en zo zien jullie hier de 1838 met deze trein doorheen dit stukje Hennuyèrse jungle trekken. Voor de volledigheid geef ik nog mee dat de 1881 (hier onzichtbaar) aan de staart duwde.

The journey to Quenast was made running light.
A couple of minutes after having taken a photo of both locos, the entrance signal of Hennuyères showed once again yellow-yellow, announcing the next train towards Brussels: a quick look at the clock learned that it would be time for the ER (empty stock train) from Braine-le-Comte to Forest Midi, here with the 1838 in front and the invisible 1881 at the rear.
