Learning the dark arts of flat-cap engineering - a recent 'steam day' at Gressenhall, a local(ish) museum of rural life. They've assembled a nice collection of early steam driven farming equipment and a whole lot of small industrial steam engines. I wanted to photograph people in this rather badly lit section of the museum so I had the 85mm f1.8 loaded.
I generally use spot evaluation, in addition to an overall light assessment - mainly because I find I can control exposure with a little more finesse.
I'm very pleased with the lack of noise at ISO1600, it allowed me to further reduce it in the post conversion without too noticable a degredation in quality.
Lens was wide open - of course - so only the narrowest of DoFs to play with. I took about 15 shots with varying focal points but these two I've posted are the best IMO. I like this one because it still allows the kid to star but also allows the chap in the background to be a bigger part of the narrative.

Old technologies survive long after newer ones are invented. If a machine is economical, it is kept. Since the owners of this Newcomen engine fueled it with waste coal, they had no need for more efficient, more complex engines. Although this engine was obsolete technologically when it was built, it nevertheless worked well and was still being used in 1929.

Built in 1821, this is the oldest residence in central Parramatta. It was owned by doctors from 1851 to 1949, mostly by Dr Walter Brown and his descendants. In 1949 it transferred to Parramatta Hospital and is now a medical and nursing museum with memorabilia dating back to the 1880s.
