Een spoorlijn die de afgelopen veertig jaar nogal veranderd is, is de lijn van Leeuwarden naar Groningen. Het gedeelte waar deze foto in 1982 is genomen, is sinds 1997 dubbelsporig. Ook het materieel op deze lijn is in veertig jaar sterk veranderd en de NS was toen de vervoerder. In 1982 waren voornamelijk diesel treinstellen plan U in de reizigersdienst op deze lijn aan te treffen. Af en toe werden treinstellen van het type DE I en DE II ingezet. Op een mooie warme zomerse dag in augustus 1982 was dit ook het geval. Op de foto is NS treinstel 169, een verbouwd DE II treinstel, onderweg van Leeuwarden naar Groningen.
