The year 1663 scratched into one of the pews at Matterdale Church in the Lake District. The church dates from at least 1573. There are various dates transcribed into the woodwork of the church at each milestone of its building and at important events in the buildings history.

There is a roof beam with the date 1573 in Roman Numerals etched into it as the date the first part of the church was complete, also a brick within the extension walls of the church bearing the date 1686 along with the date seen here on this pew.
