Blokzijl was op dat moment heel belangrijk voor de aanvoer van turf: vanuit het noorden kwam de brandstof naar de havens aan de Zuiderzee, vanwaar het verder werd vervoerd. En het was een uitwijkplaats voor de Nederlanders in de strijd tegen Spanje.

Om Blokzijl loyaal aan Holland te houden, gaf Maurits verschillende rechten aan de plaats. Zo mocht het een eigen waag bouwen, waar goederen werden gewogen en gemeten. Ook mocht de havenplaats een eigen wapen en vlag dragen. Dit was allemaal tegen het zere been van de Staten van Overijssel, want Maurits had geen toestemming gevraagd aan deze vertegenwoordigers. De Staten van Overijssel wisten het bestuur van Blokzijl uiteindelijk dan ook aan de invloed van Prins Maurits te onttrekken.

Echte stadsrechten kreeg Blokzijl overigens in 1672. Om ze in 1675 weer kwijt te raken omdat de bestuurder van Vollenhove, waar Blokzijl onder viel, het er niet mee eens was. Allemaal decennia na het overlijden van Prins Maurits.

At that time, Blokzijl was very important for the supply of peat: the fuel came from the north to the ports on the Zuiderzee, from where it was further transported. And it was a place of refuge for the Dutch in the fight against Spain.

To keep Blokzijl loyal to Holland, Maurits gave various rights to the place. For example, it was allowed to build its own weighing house, where goods were weighed and measured. The harbor town was also allowed to carry its own coat of arms and flag. This was all against the sore leg of the States of Overijssel, because Maurits had not asked permission from these representatives. The States of Overijssel eventually succeeded in withdrawing the government of Blokzijl from the influence of Prince Maurits.

Blokzijl received real city rights in 1672. Only to lose them again in 1675 because the governor of Vollenhove, which Blokzijl fell under, did not agree. All decades after the death of Prince Maurits.
