The female red-breasted merganser has a grey-brown upperpart, a brick-red head, and a coral-red bill. They have a dusky grey back enlivened occasionally by a small white patch in front of the tail. The throat, breast, and underparts are a paler whitish shade. Except for their smaller size, female red-breasted mergansers greatly resemble common mergansers. Immature males and females resemble adult females, as do non-breeding males, although they are larger and have darker crowns.
