The fabulous 1933 Auburn 12-865 Salon Boat-tailed Speedster. Hot Rod and Sports car supreme right off the shelf. One of reportedly 14 examples, designed by Alan Leamy in a particularly nice color combo!

In the Late 20s, an impressive open two-seater body was styled by Count Alexis de Sakhnoffsky featuring a boat-tail and a vee windscreen, and set the stage for later modifications.

1932 when the 12-cylinder Auburn became available, its price of $975.00 for the 12-160A model was remarkable. The V-12 cost was less than an ordinary eight cylinder medium range Chrysler product. Would customers believe that inaccurate old saw “you get what you pay for”? Well, something happened because as the company was introducing this reliable and high performing V12, the company lost almost a million dollars. The Auburn 12 offered more than a powerful V12 engine. It had a high cruising speed with a Dual Ratio rear end which, upon command from a dash-mounted lever, would offer either a 4.5 or 3.0 ratio for each of the transmission’s three gears. This reduced strain on the engine and lowered fuel consumption, despite its 6.5 liters and 160 horsepower.

When discussing both a V-12 luxury car, a beautiful landmark design, and a speed record-breaking sports car, it is almost inappropriate to mention selling price. But in fact, in 1932 when the 12-cylinder Auburn became available, its price of $975.00 for the 12-160A model was remarkable. The V-12 cost was less than an ordinary eight cylinder medium range Chrysler product. Would customers believe that inaccurate old saw “you get what you pay for”? Flamboyant paint of an exquisite 1932 Auburn top of the line 12-160A boat tailed Speedster. (yes I will later upload the whole animal)

Born from the roots of the Eckhart Carriage Company, Auburn's history dates back to 1904. The early years were prosperous but by the 1920s, the competition had become fierce and, by 1924, Auburn had fallen on hard times. Errett Loban Cord entered the scene and took the company to the pinnacle of its golden years. It became part of the Auburn, Cord, and Duesenberg family and (without question) produced some of the finest cars of this era. They were not only fast, but they were also elegantly styled and among the very best in American automotive design.

The Auburn Twelve was produced for 1932 and 1933, with the unsold cars being re-titled and sold into the 1934 model year. It was a bold and daring move for Auburn, as automobile markets sank drastically in the wake of the declining economy. Built by Lycoming (another of Cord Corporation's companies), the twelve-cylinder engine, designed by chief engineer George Kublin, had a narrow 45-degree V angle engine block and a displacement size of 391.6 cubic inches. The four main bearings supported the crankshaft and two carburetors metered fuel to the engine, one per cylinder bank. The engine offered 160 horsepower which was the highest specific output per cubic inch of any of Detroit's multi-cylinder engines of the day. It had an ingenious combustion chamber with nearly vertical pockets. A single camshaft located in the engine's V drove the valves' horizontally located stems operated directly by rocker arms riding on the cam. The valves were enclosed in separate castings that could be removed without disturbing the cylinder heads, making service much easier than conventional setups.

The Auburn was stylish, modern, and powerful, built during a difficult period in history. To showcase the ability of the Auburn, factory driver Eddie Miller set 31 American stock car speed records at Muroc Dry Lake in December of 1932 in trials observed by the AAA, including covering 500 miles at an average of 113.57 mph, which was faster than Fred Frame's winning speed at the Indianapolis 500 that year. The car Miller chose to set those records as a 12-160 Speedster. Despite the proven performance and undeniable grace and beauty, the Auburn had a price tag that began at under a thousand dollars, which was less than half the price of a comparable Cadillac V-8 and more than $2,000 below a V-12. In other words - a bargain! However, this tactic was part of its downfall, as buyers wrongly assumed that such a low-priced V-12 could not be worth the price.

Among the memorable body styles was the Speedster, which was the work of Al Leamy, a young designer hired by Cornelius Van Ranst at E.L. Cord's suggestion in 1928. He was initially employed to work on the Duesenberg Model J and Cord Front Drive L-29 before being tasked with creating Auburn's 1931 and 1932 models.

Spectacular, in your face Green, Auburn 12-160A Phaeton 1932.

Magnificent car in every way, perfectly restored.......for what it would cost you for a couple big, new Mercedes......and that is just for the paint and the chrome......money well spent, I think.

While out and about we dropped into have a look at this Chinese temple.

“Man” literally means civil while “Mo” is martial. The Man Mo Temple is dedicated to the King Emperor Man and Holy King Emperor Kwan. The two gods were human. Man, the Civil God, known as Cheung Ah Tse was born in 287A.D. during the Chin dynasty. He was said to have jurisdiction over the destinies of the lives of government officials. He was granted the title “King -Emperor Man Cheong” by an emperor in Yuan dynasty. Kwan, the Martial God, is known as Kwan Wan Cheung, Kwan Tai or Kwan Yue. He was born in 160A.D. during the period of Three Kingdoms. He was a great warrior and was always associated with righteousness and loyalty. He was deified by an emperor of the Ming dynasty as “Martial God”. Kwan Tai is also well worshipped on his own. There are many Kwan Tai Temples in Hong Kong too.

I will not bore viewers (if any) with a long drawn out history about this finely crafted, fully CCCA certified antique classic 1932 Auburn 12-160A Boattail Speedster.

Picture recorded at 2023 Geneva Concours, Geneva, IL.

Okay, so I did have a “story” about my experience relating to my attempts to get some pictures of this car but I will spare everyone the “gruesome details”.

Let it suffice to say, simply, hope ya’all enjoy

The Apsara Dance is played by a woman, sewn into tight-fitting traditional dress, whose graceful, sinuous gestures are codified to narrate classical myths or religious stories. Wikipedia

The Apsara dance is a traditional dance of the Kingdom of Cambodia, dating back to the 7th century. ... According to Hindu mythology, Apsaras were beautiful female creatures that descended from heaven to entertain Gods and Kings with their dance. The Apsara Dance is played by a woman, sewn into tight-fitting traditional dress, whose graceful, sinuous gestures are codified to narrate classical myths or religious stories. Wikipedia

The Khmer folk dance, which was created in the 20th century, highlights the various cultural tradition and ethnic groups of Cambodia. Folk dance in Cambodia is usually faster than classical dances, its movements and gesture are not as stylized as classical dance. Folk dancers usually wear Chams, hill tribes, farmers, and peasants.

[Colors are muted in many of the photographs taken in Auschwitz and although there are many historical photographs of individuals and personal possessions they will not be shown in respect to the somber nature of the holocaust.]

The fences covered 300 kilometres and consisted of several strands of copper wire, backed with barbed wire, and energized to several thousand volts. An estimated 3,000 human fatalities were caused by the fence, as well as the destruction of livestock.

The Auschwitz concentration camp was a complex of over 40 concentration and extermination camps operated by Nazi Germany in occupied Poland during World War II and the Holocaust.

Auschwitz was the largest camp established by the Germans. It was a complex of camps, including a concentration, extermination, and forced-labor camp. It was located at the town of Oswiecim near the prewar German-Polish border in Eastern Upper Silesia, an area annexed to Germany in 1939. Auschwitz I was the main camp and the first camp established at Oswiecim. Auschwitz II (Birkenau) was the killing center at Auschwitz. Trains arrived at Auschwitz-Birkenau almost daily with transports of Jews from virtually every German-occupied country of Europe. Auschwitz III, also called Buna or Monowitz, was established in Monowice to provide forced laborers for nearby factories, including the I.G. Farben works. At least 1.1 million Jews were killed in Auschwitz. Other victims included between 70,000 and 75,000 Poles, 21,000 Roma, and about 15,000 Soviet prisoners of war.

My brother Doug and I made a visit on September 19, 2020 to the Auburn Cord Duesenberg Museum in Auburn, Indiana. This Auburn was sold new with six wire wheels and a tachometer for $1539. The owner had the foresight to save the car, and it was donated to the museum by his nephew. The car is on display in the Gallery of Racers and Record-Setters.
