A BEAUTY that is common and widespread in Britain, their song is a familiar sound now that spring is upon us., during the breeding season, its diet is one that includes a significant proportion of insects and in winter almost strictly seed-eating regime. The male above was captured in my garden, was not sure whether to post this one or not, so do hope you enjoy it.

STREAKED brown bird, widespread but rather nondescript, the Meadow Pipit is a ground-dwelling species that feeds on invertebrates. Found all year round, out of breeding season it is often found in loose flocks. Posing well on Skomer Island, South Wales and enjoyed its pseet-pseet-pseet call, as seen above.

STARTED TO FIND WHAT I WANTED OUT OF BIRD PHOTOGRAPHY, that the background was even more important than the bird. The most common of birds can look good, as I have tried to show above , and this style I have stuck to ever since. LOOKING at other people I follow, can often tell, who has posted it, before looking at the name, because of there style or presentation.

FOUND in a wide range of habitats, including farm and fallow land, bush, coastal and savanna woodland. Sprightly and much attracted to flowering trees and shrubs where it takes nectar in addition to small insects. Very hard to photograph as they move so fast, this was the best, but unfortunately the leaf covers most of its colourful belly.

A HIGHLIGHT of this year was to capture this woodlark, a lifer for me, and such a joy to see, The species is a real challenge to find, and Surrey and Hampshire heathland are about the only spots, sometimes am told they associate with skylarks during the winter.

"SPARROW HAWK NEEDED!"
Have been so lucky to have a great variety of birds at all my garden feeders, but this year the Sparrow numbers have grown so much, and them being a little bit bigger than many other garden visitors, many have been frightened away like the long-tailed tits, So a Sparrow Hawk is the only answer, am saying this tongue-in-cheek.

Downy Woodpeckers are fairly small (6 inch length; 15cm) woodpeckers that stay with us during the winter months. Males are distinguished by the red spot on his head, which is lacking in females.
Explored 4/14/2022 (#489)
MUCH like the house sparrow, but more brightly and strikingly patterned, the Spanish Sparrow is essentially a southeast European bird, and not actually common in Spain. FOUND the voice a dead give away, higher and more metallic than the House Sparrow. Seen near Lake Garda , Northern Italy.

DISTINCTIVE FINCH, and a familiar garden resident, in many parts of the region, but will often dominate bird-feeders, keeping away smaller species. It is also very prone to disease, and there is a line off thought that this maybe down to poor hygiene with the feeders, so a lesson for me, and everybody, that feeders need sterilizing and washing often. They are still a joy to watch, and a privilege to have visit the garden, love sun flower hearts!

THE Greenfich above seen near my feeders has got the parasite PROTOZOAN PASASITETICHOMONAS by the looks of the nobbles on its foot, while it holds the other one up in discomfort, it will eventuly kill him. It has been sugested that dirty feeders, and the area under the feeders can spread the disease. A lesson for me, as I thought my feeding area was kept fairly clean, but must up my hygiene. Very upsetting.........................

It is from the same designer, as the model I showed you yesterday (in case you missed that, see first comment box). It is a newer model, but you can see they are related by the shape of their eyes and head.
I folded it with a selfmade two layers Unryu tissue paper, 30x30cm. Kind of experimenting in glueing paper together. This came out all right.

My birthday has come and gone (Nov 16), and we've opened another album to hold the coming photos of my fifth year (www.flickr.com/photos/130722340@N04/albums/72157675110790161).
This second entry (the first was my birthday portrait: www.flickr.com/photos/130722340@N04/31034745905/in/album-...) was taken this morning on the Prescott-Russell Trail, our favorite place, where we can access many special side trails depending on the time allowed or how adventurous we want to be that day.
Shorter days and the time change now mean that my weekday walks will take place only late in the afternoon after Dad gets home from work--shorter walks than I'd like. But weekends are still open for the longer fun we both enjoy so much.
We are expecting 10-15cm of snow tomorrow! Dad will be busy for most of the day (the CFL Ottawa Redblacks are hosting Edmonton in the Eastern Conference Final, and he'll be there to cheer them on--Go Redblacks!) but we hope to squeeze in a few photos.
Have a great weekend!

Last week we got about 60cm of snow and today we got about 10-15cm of ice and sleet (which is like ten times worse than 1 meter of snow). So New England winter is in full swing and I am looking forward for summer 2022 and the day I am going to fly to Greece. Until that day though, I can think about that by looking at photos from last summer. This is the Bouza lighthouse in Aegina, one of my favorite places on the island. Errected in 1881, it's only 9meters tall but still one of the island's most famous landmarks. It sits at the island's westernost spot right next to the church of Saint Apostles. A beautiful place to relax and enjoy the sunset as the ferries pass by. It feels like the lighthouse is providing a shining path to them.
PS: I know I haven't been around much commenting and (most importantly) replying to comments on my photos, but at some point I will find the time to show my appreciation to your comments and faves!

This is a very old photo that for some reason had been labeled as private in my photostream, all I did was change its status, I have not re-released it, my apologies if it has appeared as a "new" post, I would not have done it if I'd known as this is some really early work that does not represent my current output. Sorry for the inconvenience.
location: North America, Europe
edibility: Deadly
fungus colour: Red or redish or pink
normal size: 5-15cm
cap type: Convex to shield shaped
stem type: Ring on stem, Volva on stem
spore colour: White, cream or yellowish
habitat: Grows in woods, Grows on the ground
Amanita muscaria (L. ex Fr.) Hooker Fly Agaric, Amanite tue-mouches, Fausse Oronge Roter Fliegenpilz Cap 8–20cm across, globose or hemispherical at first then flattening, bright scarlet covered with distinctive white pyramidal warts which may be washed off by rain leaving the cap almost smooth and the colour fades. Stem 80–180×10–20mm, white, often covered in shaggy volval remnants as is the bulbous base, the white membranous ring attached to the stem apex sometimes becoming flushed yellow from the pigment washed off the cap. Flesh white, tinged red or yellow below the cap cuticle, Taste pleasant, smell faint. Gills free, white. Spore print white. Spores broadly ovate, nonamyloid, 9.5–10.5×7–8µ. Habitat usually with birch trees, Season late summer to late autumn. Common. Deadly poisonous. It contains many different toxins see below. Distribution, America and Europe.
This is one of the easiest species to recognize and describe, and consequently its properties have been well documented for centuries. The common name Fly Agaric comes from the practice of breaking the cap into platefuls of milk, used since medieval times to stupefy flies. It is a strong hallucinogen and intoxicant and was used as such by the Lapps. In such cases the cap is dried and swallowed without chewing. The symptoms begin twenty minutes to two hours after ingestion. The central nervous system is affected and the muscles of the intoxicated person start to pull and twitch convulsively, followed by dizzines and a death-like sleep. During this stage the mushrooms are often vomited but nevertheless the drunkenness and stupor continue. While in this state of stupor, the person experiences vivid visions and on waking is usually filled with elation and is physically very active. This is due to the nerves being highly stimulated, the slightest effort of will producing exaggerated physical effects, e.g. the intoxicated person will make a gigantic leap to clear the smallest obstacle. The Lapps may have picked up the habit of eating the Fly Agaric through observing the effects of the fungus on reindeer, which are similarly affected. Indeed, they like it so much that all one has to do to round up a wandering herd is to scatter pieces of Fly Agaric on the ground. Another observation the Lapps made from the reindeer was that the intoxicating compounds in the fungus can be recycled by consuming the urine of an intoxicated person. The effects of consuming this species are exceedingly unpredictable; some people remain unaffected while others have similar, or different, symptoms to those above, and at least one death is attributed to A. muscaria. This unpredictability is due to the fungus containing different amounts of the toxins ibotenic acid and muscimol according to season, method of cooking and ingestion, as well as the subject’s state of mind. Ibotenic acid is mostly concentrated in the coloured skin of the cap. This very unstable compound rapidly degrades on drying to form muscimol which is five to ten times more potent. Traditionally, where A. muscaria is used as an inebriant, it is the dried cap which is taken.
