Last weekend Milwaukee 156 was unveiled after restoration to its 1976 bicentennial paint. The new paint job looks spectacular and its a true wonder the locomotive survived after going through so many different owners and very nearly being scrapped.
Back in 2015, the 156 was just another of blue dip SD40-2s somewhat recently purchased by Pan Am, wearing the number MEC 609. In those long lost days, the SD40-2s were probably the least interesting power on the railroad. The patched out C40-8s and certainly the CSX acquisition were nowhere on the horizon.
After a week of excellent tourguiding by George Pitarys around New England, we made our way back towards Boston where I would catch my Amtrak train back home. On the way we were able to get a final shot of MEC 609 leading train POED (Portland - East Deerfeld) screaming south at North Berwick. I didnt realize until much later that I had gotten the former and now once again celebrity bicentennial in the lead.
Wishing all my US friends here a happy belated 4th of July.
The best of a bad bunch tonight. I'm in the "can't be arsed" phase of the project at the mo. A long weekend of photography, friends and IPAs awaits which will give my head a wobble no doubt.
