Molveno is a comune (municipality) in Trentino in the northern Italian region of Trentino-Alto Adige/Südtirol, located about 40 kilometres (25 mi) northwest of Trento. It is famous for its positioning on Lake Molveno as a holiday destination, its nearby ski resorts (Andalo-Paganella and its connection to the National Park Adamello Brenta.

Molveno is located at the northern end of a 4-kilometre (2.5 mi) long lake (Lago di Molveno), at the foot of the Brenta Group and the Paganella mountain.

The Lake of Molveno, formed by a landslide about 4000 years ago, is the second largest in Trentino-Alto Adige, 3.3 square kilometres (1.3 sq mi). It has a maximum depth of 123 metres (404 ft). It's famous for its diverse fish species, including trout, arctic char and perch.

Thanks to a heads up from a friend in Lawrence, I was finally able to nab UP's LMC40 running with the local MoPac caboose on the rear end! This has been something that they've been doing on-and-off for a bit now, and it worked out nicely for me on this First Friday.

The challenge, photographically was to figure out how to effectively include the DeSoto Shops product into the photo on a line that runs primarily east-west. The answer was to head to one of the curves in Topeka, and telesmash it, of course!

Here, an engine built for the Cotton Belt, and a caboose built for the Missouri Pacific roll a local past a family-owned Chili parlor in the year 2024. Wild stuff. The MP 13832 was built in 1980 by MP's DeSoto, Missouri shops, and finished in Sedalia, while the UP 1029 was a 1989 product of LaGrange.

After returning from the pole yard on the west end of town, Union Pacific's LMC40 shoves back into the Topeka Yard via the Squirrel Switch. Here, they're protecting the shove back into the yard from the platform of the UP 25881 as they roll through SJ Jct., and about to hit Tyler St. Behind the UP caboose is the MP 13832, and powering the train is GP40N no. 1396.

UP 1982 rolled into town this afternoon on the M-NPKC, and after realizing that it was trailing, I started thinking through other shots to take of it, esp. given my limited free time over my lunch break.

Sure enough, on the east end of the Topeka yard, I got to see this unit rolling by MP caboose #13832, which has been hanging out here for a few months now. While you're wondering about MP's history in Topeka, its worth mentioning that Kansas' capitol city was at the end of a MP branch line off of the main to Colorado that cut off at Lomax, KS. This line was torn up by the UP in the late 80's.

MP Caboose #13832 brings up the rear of UP's YTP53 as it returns to the yard in Topeka, KS after working the west end of town.

On Tuesday afternoon, I photographed UP's LMC40 working the BNSF interchange in Topeka with not just one, but TWO cabooses in the consist! These two cars have both been working in Topeka for a while now, but this is the first that I've seen them together. They are the UP 25881 and MP 13832. From what I understand, the two cabooses are together as a result of "securement rules" that relate to leaving a single piece of equipment on the mainline.

Also of note is the recently-repainted GP38-2, no. 502, which was repainted at North Little Rock on July 25th, 2019. Especially compared to its photos from before the repainting, it looks great!

10 Things About Dice:

1. Dice's name is actually "Dicere." But he doesn't like that very much. (Neither do I)

2. He's quite OC about his hair, and hates anyone touching it or messing it up after he's styled it to his idea of perfection.

3. He LOVES tomatoes. Smear it on yourself, and he'll lick every bit off you. It turns him on.

4. He's a born dancer and loves Usher and Michael Jackson. He can watch any dance video twice, and have the choreography down 99%.

5. He actually loves Karaoke, and is a mic hogger. What's horrifying is he can't sing to save his life. Once he's got the mic, everyone else is out the room.

6. He has special dancing jockey undies to keep his privado from getting scrambled. The rest of the time, he goes commando. Free as a bird!

7. As a kid, he was the perfect bully target. But after seeing him smile, no terrorizer has the heart to actually bully him.

8. The dice on his wrists (1-3 dots on his right), and (4-6 dots on his left) - are often mistaken for tattoos. They're actually stigmata, and hurt like a bitch when they appear.

9. He's not of legal age in most states. Dice is 17, but he's not a virgin and he HAS gotten drunk. :) What's funny is, he's the sweetest, nicest martyr you'll probably ever meet. So don't let his record deceive you!

10. He has an actual voice which you can download here.

.... I think I overtagged. :/

Just for fun, here's a shot of the MP caboose #13832 that's been calling the UP Topeka yard home for a few months now. I've not seen it used yet, but I know it usually works on one of the morning switch jobs. Today's clouds allowed a nice shot of it that you can't normally get without some uber-trespassing.

I just recently backpacked over 200 miles, mostly cross country, from about 15-20 miles south of Mt. Whitney to Tuolumne Meadows in Yosemite. I started and ended by myself, but along the way I meet and hiked with many wonderful people for short periods of time.

Day 9

Ice! Ice everywhere! I woke up this morning before sunrise and reached for my water bottle to drink, and nothing came out because it was frozen. My sleeping bag, pack, and my gear that I left out last night are covered in frost. The ground and any vegetation that has managed to get a foot hold here is covered in ice crystals. The lake, surprisingly, was not frozen, but a pond on the other side of the trail that I found while scouting out a good spot for sunrise pictures was almost completely frozen.

While waiting for the first glow of morning on Cal-tech peak (13832 ft) my feet were becoming numb inside my boots. My fingers where numb too. Finally light appeared along the jagged ridge and slowly crept down the peak. I took what photos I saw until the warm sun touched me. I was then able to warm up my toes and fingers. Once the sun touched a large rock with a slightly angled flat top I went back to my camping spot to grab my gear, especially my sleeping bag, and I put it on the rock to defrost it. While I waited I made jasmine tea, and rehydrated breakfast. Once my gear was ice free and dry I packed up and headed for forester pass.

The trail wove its way up to a saddle on the Kings-Kern Divide, overlooking the lake I had spent last night at. On the way up I heard a very loud, obnoxious person coming up behind me, every few minutes he'd let out a loud yell, followed by another yell from someone else, looking down I saw they were in a group of three.

Finally I reached the top of forester pass (13153 ft), the highest point on my route.

There were two people up there already, packs off, resting and enjoying the view and their accomplishment. I did the same. Eventually the group of three behind me reached the top. It turns out that the yelling was sneezing, very loud sneezing, and the other would yell "gesundheit!". The group consisted of two guys and a girl. One of them asked, "Could you take our photo?"

"Sure, if you can take mine after." I replied

After photos we started taking, the two guys, Reinhard and Dan, were from Phoenix, AZ, and Marion was from Austria, they had met on trail and had decided to hike together.

"Since we're going the same way would you mind if I hike with y'all for a while?" I asked, "I'd love the company."

Dan replied, "That would be great! But just so you know, I'm crazy"

"And I'm nutz!" said Reinhard, then he loudly sneezed.

"Gesundheit!" yelled Dan.

"Thats ok" I said, "I'm nuts too, I just keep my nuts to myself!" Then I took a large handful of my trail mix, which contains lots of nuts, and shoved it in my mouth.

The four of us continued hiking north together. Since I began this journey, I would tell everyone I passed on the trail, "Happy Trails". These two would sing the first verse of the Happy Trails song to everyone they passed:

"Happy trails to you,

Until we meet again.

Happy trails to you,

Keep smiling until then."

I eventually gave in and began singing it with them. I told Reinhard that I have the whole song on my iPod. "Let me listen to it when we stop for lunch later, I want to write down the rest of the song."

At the first trees we came to after Forester Pass we stopped for lunch. We dropped pack and all of us removed our shoes and socks. Reinhard asked if I liked beef jerky and then said, "I make my own jerky, here try this." He handed me a piece.

It was the best beef jerky I've ever had, I can only describe it as a spicy thanksgiving dinner. Then he said, "Do you like wine? I make my own with raspberries, here try this." He handed me a squeeze pouch of it. It was fantastic!

Marion was trying to lighten her pack and gave me some smoked sausages from Austria. I had one then and saved the rest for later.

I let Reinhard listen to the song Happy Trails, and from then on we'd sing the rest of it:

"Who cares about the clouds when we're together,

Just sing a song, and bring the sunny weather."

We continued on towards Vidette Meadows. Along the way I found a blueberry bush and we had a wonderful snack and I finally found some wild onions too! We are finally below the tree line once again, and thick forest began to close in around us.

Once we reached Vidette Meadows (9840 ft) I stopped. We said goodbye and they continued on to Rae Lakes.

I caught four fish in Bubbs Creek, three of them got away, and one I ate. We can't have fires so I boiled it with some of the onions. I used the water that boiled it to rehydrate the extra meal I was given by the Boy Scout Troop. The forest here is too thick for a good sunset photo and I'm too tired to go wandering around looking for one so I will take tonight off. The mosquitoes are bad here so I will be using my tent.

for anyone who is interested, I am making a book of this journey, it will include photos, maps and the story that I have been including in the descriptions of these photos.

I will let y'all know when it is finished.

I generally try to stay away from joining the "It's All Crap Now" camp, but it really is nice to see a caboose on the rear end of a train. Here's the MP 13832 on the rear end of the YTP53 in Topeka on 4/11/16.

Tête Jaune Cache is an unincorporated rural area and the site of an important abandoned historic town in British Columbia, Canada. Its population is approximately 500.
