One year ago I was on holiday in Nippon. These are some photo's of exactly one year ago.
The 14th of November was my final day in Nara. I could have spent the morning and afternoon in Nara before taking the train back to Osaka and then to Itami airport for the flight back to Tokyo Haneda in the evening.
I only spent a couple of hours visiting the Kasuga-taisha Shinto shrine before heading to Osaka. I was just too exhausted from almost three weeks of holiday and it was cold and I just didn't feel like doing any more temple hopping. I had to preserve my energy.
Looking back I did enjoy my visit. It was deserted and this place is from the time that Nara was the capital of Japan, some 1200 years ago. All these 100s of stone lanterns must have been there for decades or centuries. It is special walking around such an old and beautiful place.
A stroll on a sunny autumns day, and I found myself wandering the cemetery around the town church. A church dating back to 1200 AD. The sun shining on my back, and from a distance I could see the large multi coloured windows augmenting the stone facade. I drew closer and saw movement in the windows. Up close I could see my own image starring back at me. A distorted face, cracked and illuminated by the sun. Is that the past? Is it the future? Light reflected in those old windows, brittle and withered glass.
How many had starred into you seeing themselves before me? What do you think of me? Through all the years you haven’t, and probably will never, judge. Your honest and unbiased reflection. You stand here as a witness of time, I just hope I don’t take up too much space in your reflection.
