Even ter vergelijking: vorig jaar januari met de ICE van Duisburg naar Berlijn. Een rit met viereneenhalf uur vertraging, krijsende kinderen, versleten stoelen met veel te weinig beenruimte, op elk station een stoelendans (en dat was het eerste uur om de tien minuten) omdat instappende passagiers andere mensen moeten vragen om op te staan want zij hebben tenslotte wél gereserveerd voor deze boemeltrein, bukken voor rondzwiepende rugzakken, hoge pieptonen vanwege storingen aan de trein. Uiteindelijk moest Herr Lokführer in het donker op de vrije baan een controle uitvoeren door met een zaklamp over het ballastbed langs twee gekoppelde ICE1- stellen op en neer te lopen: duur 20 minuten. Lachwekkend als het niet zo godvergeten irritant was geweest.
En dan met IRYO van Valencia naar Madrid: via de OMIO-app plaatsen gereserveerd en dan in iets minder dan twee uur non-stop met een constante snelheid van 300 km/h in alle luxe, rust en ruimte door het Spaanse landschap zoeven. En naast een bistrowagen ook personeel met consumpties op een trolley. En die stilte: heerlijk. Ik kan het alleen maar aanraden. Op deze foto het Frecciarossa-treinstel 109 010 van IRYO te Madrid Chamartìn dat zodadelijk als trein 6185 gaat vertrekken naar Valencia Joaquìn Sorolla. IRYO is een samenwerkingsverband tussen Trenitalia, Air Nostrum en Globalvia dat met treinstellen type Frecciarossa 1000 haar diensten uitvoert op diverse lijnen in Spanje.
Overigens krijg je alleen toegang tot de perrons van de HST’s met toegangsbewijs én na bagagecheck via de scanner. En je mag het perron pas betreden als het wordt vrijgegeven via het vertrektijdenbord in de hal. Net als op een vliegveld maar dan zonder wachtrijen. Instapkaarten worden op de perrons gecontroleerd: daarna word je met rust gelaten. Prima geregeld, ik hou daar wel van. Strak en gestructureerd.

This photo shows 'Lift 109', a glass domed lift that rises through the middle of the north west chimney of Battersea power station.
This gives stunning 360° views of London.
It is called lift 109,because it is 109m to the top of the chimney.
It had only been open to the public for six weeks when this was taken.
As you can see, on this day, it was also offering good views of the Moon too!

Nelle stesse settimane in cui un convoglio era adoperato fra Trento e Milano nel quadro dei servizi straordinari legati all'Expo, l'altro ETR170 di Trentino Trasporti venne impiegato in turno con i gemelli dell'altoatesina SAD sui servizi locali lungo l'asse del Brennero giungendo fino al confine di Stato.
Nella foto il convoglio 109 è appena uscito dalla lunga galleria del Fleres diretta proprio verso il valico. (31/7/15)

Back in the early 1900's many Fiats were built in American in order to avoid the substantial tariffs placed on these imports, and this car was one of those. At the time, Fiats were very expensive, and depending on the coachwork they ranged in price between $3500 and $4500 dollars. And, when you consider the cost of the typical Ford Model T at the time being well under $1000 dollars the Fiats had a huge price tag. And, also huge in size was this car pictured above. One can't really appreciate it's rather intimidating mass until you stand next to it...it's BIG! And powering this one, obviously built for the race track with it's open wheeled configuration, was an equally huge 9 liter 4 cylinder motor pumping out a respectable 75hp. And the sound of it running with it's open headers "snapping, barking, and growling" was also huge on the db scale. And now entering it's 110th year of life it makes a huge presence as it makes the rounds at the show circuits around the country. Did I say "huge" enough? Well, I think you get the picture!
