Williams was a Liverpool-based landscape painter who exhibited view of Cheshire and Wales at the Liverpool Academy between 1845 and 1858. In the early 1850s he came under the influence of the Pre-Raphaelites, but by the time he painted this work three years later, after his move to London, his style had become more conventional. Egremont is a part of the Wirral bank of the river Mersey between New Brighton and Seacombe.
