Day 5

This picture was taken near the top of the mountain.

An unforgettable experience in December to me : a frosty world.

I remembered we got up early that day and arrived at Baishi mountain after several hours. In the afternoon, we reached Andongjun mountain. There are several ponds therebetween.

Baishi mountain (Baishishan) is listed as No. 87 of 100 Peaks of Taiwan, with a height of 3110 meters (10203 ft) above the sea level.

10203 having arrived at Euston with the Royal Scot. 1958.

One of 3 Introduced from 1951, English Electric and Bulleid design for the Southern region. They were 1750 h.p apart from 10203 which was 2000 h.p. Weighing in at a hefty 135 tons, only the Peaks were heavier at 138 tons. Derby 1956.

The third of the Bulleid designed diesels for the Southern was built four years after sister D16/2 locos 10201 & 10202 and was the true precursor of the pilot scheme class 40s with the English Electric 16CVST engine uprated from 1,750hp in the originals to 2,000hp and with the same bogie design. It was also uniquely constructed at Brighton Works (the other two came from Ashford) and after brief trials on the Southern was allocated to Willesden depot in company with the earlier examples. After nine years working on the WCML all three were withdrawn in 1963 and stored for five years at Derby before being scrapped at Cashmores.

This 6 x 10 negative is one of the most evocative I have seen of the early diesel era showing one of the ex-SR Bulleid designed D16/2's on an Euston - Bletchley evening local formed of immaculate ex-LMS stock about to be overhauled by one of the new kids on the block derived from 10203 on a down express.

1Co-Co1 diesel locomotives nos 10201 & 10203 stand at Derby Works on 18th April 1964. The locos (plus 10202) were designed by Bulleid for the Southern Railway. 10201 (1750hp) was built at Ashford, however did not appear until 1950, after nationalisation. 10203 (2000hp) was outshopped from Brighton Works in 1954. Initially working/trialled on the Southern Region, they transferred to the Midland Region based at Camden/Willesden from 1955. All were withdrawn in December 1963 and cut up at Cashmores (Great Bridge).

Also in the picture is ex LMS 2-6-4T no. 42500. built at Derby in 1934. Withdrawn in 1962 after service on the Southend line, the loco is part of the National Collection, having been exhibited at York NRM, Bressingham and at Barrow Hill.

10203, the third of the EE Bulleid designed D16/2 type, is backing down onto an Exeter train on 16 May 1955. M7 class 0.4.4T 30249 is alongside and although both were withdrawn in 1963, the tank engine had a working life of some 66 years in contrast to less than 10 for the diesel.

40077 approaches York from the North light engine, 31st July 1976.

Locomotive History

In 1955 British Railways implemented the start of its Modernisation Scheme and ordered one hundred and seventy four diesel prototype locomotives from various UK manufacturers. In the type 4 category English Electric proposed a 2000 hp. locomotive technically based on the layout of 10203, but with the body-style similar to a restyled 10000. British Railways placed an order for ten locomotives and the first locomotive D200 was accepted into BR stock in March 1958. This was followed by further orders so that the class finally totalled two hundred locomotives. 40077 was originally D277 and was built at the Vulcan Foundry in Newton-le-Willows, Lancashire in May 1960. On entering traffic it was allocated to York MPD before transfer to Gateshead in June 1960. Apart from two spells at York in 1967 and 1969 it would remain a Gateshead engine until October 1980 when it transferred to Healey Mills. Its final transfer was in January 1983 when it transferred to Longsight from where it was withdrawn in June 1983. 40077 was broken up at Doncaster Works during April 1984.

Bulleid-designed SR/BR diesels 10201 and 10203 stored out of use at Derby works, in August 1963. The old 1839-vintage roundhouse is in the background..

Both locos were officially withdrawn at the end of 1963, and both were finally scrapped in early 1968. Sadly, no examples were preserved..

Today (2018) this location is part of Derby College, and the station car park. The roundhouse has been restored, as a conference venue..

Birmingham New Street was a very different place in the late 1950's in this photograph 10202 is ready to depart for London, it has a been re-liveried from the original black into "Express Locomotive green" although the name, "tin-can", written in the dirt on the side does add an individual touch.

10202 was one of the 3 diesels ordered by O.V.S. Bullied for the Southern Region, it was built at Ashford in 1951. This and 10201 had an English Electric 16 cylinder 16SVT engine rated at 1750hp 10203 the last of the trio was slightly more powerful. 10202 lasted until 1963. On the right is a very new looking Metro-Cammell DMU, later class 101 which is just leaving for Lichfield.

Period touches include the signal box and mechanical signals, and the Brylcreemed trainspotter in shorts with his father the background has of course totally changed, if this angle were repeated today the skyline would have the Rotunda in it and the huge white arch over the new Bull Ring shopping centre.

This is a rescan which has replace the picture from 9 years ago, the original was okay but this is cleaner and much sharper, it now has a sky! One feature remains, it is slightly crooked because to straighten it would lose the maroon coach.

A celebrity in later years 40122 approaches Derby with a train of CBA limestone hopper wagons probably on a Tunstead - Margam duty, 4th September 1976.

Fifty two CBA wagons were built in 1969 at Shildon for limestone traffic based on the HAA coal hopper with the addition of a roof. A further five were built in 1977 to replace damaged vehicles.

Locomotive History

40122 at first glance looks like any other “run of the mill” class 40, however it is actually the class prototype D200. In 1955 British Railways implemented the start of its Modernisation Scheme and ordered one hundred and seventy four diesel prototype locomotives from various UK manufacturers. In the type 4 category English Electric proposed a 2000 hp. locomotive technically based on the layout of 10203, but with the bodystyle similar to a restyled 10000. British Railways placed an order for ten locomotives and the first locomotive D200 was accepted into British Railways stock in March 1958 allocated to Stratford MPD for Great Eastern duties. After acceptance trials and various crew-training duties, the first well-documented demonstration run was on 18th April 1958, from London Liverpool Street to Norwich. D200 would remain on Great Eastern duties until 1967 when it transferred to the London Midland Region and would spend the rest of its career based in the North West. Renumbered under the 1973 TOPS renumbering scheme 40122 it was withdrawn in August 1981 and it was assumed it would be claimed by the National Railway Museum. However the National Railway Museum were not interested, and 40122 was dumped at Carlisle. Growing interest in the locomotive prevented it from being dragged to the Swindon works for scrap, and a reprieve was eventually granted with 40122 reinstated to traffic. To keep costs to a minimum, the repair work on 40122 was carried out as an apprentice training programme at Toton MPD, using withdrawn 40076 as the 'donor' loco for its power unit and bogies. 40122 re-entered traffic in April 1983, painted in original Brunswick green livery with full yellow ends. It was assigned to special duties (enthusiast railtours) and general freight and passenger traffic in the Carlisle area with a regular duty being a daily out-and-back Carlisle to Leeds passenger train. It would be the last class 40 in service when the surviving class 40’s were withdrawn en-masse in January 1985 and was withdrawn finally in April 1988, almost thirty years to the day after first entering service. Fortunately by that time the National Railway Museum had changed their views, and D200 took her rightful place in the National Collection and is currently (February 2026 at Locomotion, Shildon.

On a visit to Derby Works in 1966 the scrap line revealed the early diesels awaiting their fate. Here 10000 is sandwiched between 10202 and 10201.

10203 was also present but 10001 was not there. A sad sight of these pioneers.

..10 yrs hence/this date

The 29th of July 1955 and D16/2 Prototype 10203 is leaving Euston on the 16.15 service to Bletchley.

The loco was new from Brighton Works in July 1954. BR database has her transferring to Camden on the 13th of August 1955 from Nine Elms, but if the date here is correct (it was quite clear on the original negative packet) it was a bit earlier.

Put into store at Derby Works in October 1962 and officially withdrawn in December 1963 the loco was cut up at Cashmores 3 months later.

Note despite overhaul and repainting the "Britannia" has been outshopped with the BR early emblem, which effectively became redundant in 1956, whilst the newly overhauled Stanier "Princess Coronation" would only survive in BR service until December the following year.

Stagecoach 10203 (SL64 HZC) on Route N199, Charing Cross Station

The last journey on the first night of Route N199

From the collection of the late John Duff (J.D.)

Built as a "Hydra-Cushion" boxcar for the Southern Pacific in December of 1974 (as SP 245596), this 50' boxcar has found continued life on the Lake State Railway in Michigan. It received new paint in the late 2010's and still looks good several years later. That's probably the last paint job it will get, given its rapid approach to 40 years of service.
