Remarks: Tuesday morning December 29th, 2020 Amtrak P42DC number 161 leads the California Zephyr train number 5 seen here climbing to tunnel 1 on the Moffat Subdivision. 15 minutes earlier this entire scene was blanketed in a thick fog; the remnants of the previous nights snow event. Light snow fell over most of the Front Range overnight leaving a light coating of snow just enough for a winter scene worth capturing.

"Have You Ever Seen the Rain?" is a song written by John Fogerty and released as a single in (early) 1971 from the album Pendulum (1970) by roots rock group Creedence Clearwater Revival. The song charted highest in Canada, reaching number 1 on the RPM 100 national singles chart in March 1971. In the U.S., in the same year it peaked at number 8 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart (where it was listed as "Have You Ever Seen the Rain / Hey Tonight", together with the B-side).

Some have speculated that the song's lyrics are referencing the Vietnam War, with the "rain" being a metaphor for bombs falling from the sky. In his review for Allmusic website, Mark Deming suggests that the song is about the idealism of the 1960s and about how it faded in the wake of events such as the Altamont Free Concert and the Kent State shootings, and that Fogerty is saying that the same issues of the 1960s still existed in the 1970s but that people were no longer fighting for them. However, Fogerty himself has said in interviews and prior to playing the song in concert that it is about rising tension within CCR and the imminent departure of his brother Tom from the band.

Wikipedia: Pancake ice forms in conditions of high wave activity, in contrast to other types of sea ice formed under calm conditions. Pancake ice can form in two processes: (1) on water covered to some degree in slush, shuga or grease ice, or (2) from breaking of ice rind, nilas or even gray ice in agitated conditions.[3] If the waves are strong enough, pancakes can raft over each other, creating an uneven top and bottom surface on the ice. At this point, the pancake ice will fuse together and amalgamate into an ice sheet. This ice sheet will continue to grow over the winter. This process increases pancake ice's resilience, resulting in characteristic length scales less than ocean wavelengths and causing waves passing through pancake ice not to scatter.[3]

BNSF 9750 is on the spur track next to Main 1 on the Joint Line in Spruce, CO.

BNSF will park locomotives at various locations on the Joint Line between Denver and Palmer Lake to help out if a train stalls out climbing the grade. Traditionally, these units would be located in Castle Rock, here at Spruce, and Palmer Lake. I'm not sure if they park one in Castle Rock any more, and I can't remember the last time I saw one in Palmer Lake.

This is the first time I've seen a MACe serving in this role, and, with only 20-something of these on the BNSF roster, after this one leaves, it might be the last time. The H3 scheme looks good on these updated MACs, but I prefer the look of the H4 scheme that's on their DC-powered sister units. Hopefully BNSF turns more of their MACs in MACes, but I'm not holding my breath...

H-GALPAS muscles up the Midway Sub to Northtown for a crew change. Nice to see H1 paint leading in decent afternoon light. Welcome home California Zephyr! On its second day of operation on April 14, 2020 is like a omen of good luck; probably the last fresh snow of the year! Amtrak number 5 is stirring up the fresh powder at Coal Creek and Tunnel 1 on a beautiful snowy morning. blowing snow and flock delight this very Rocky Mountain scene. I went out yesterday and shot the first day of service since being postponed last month due to COVID-19 and the gray cloudy day just didn’t excite me.

Back before CN embraced AC traction and hordes of GEVOs C44-9W leads #142 downgrade at Mile 9.1 on the Dundas Sub. The train, which instead of its normal doublestacks, has autoracks behind the power, is passing the shack that was used by the foreman stationed onsite for a few years to monitor the level of an underground spring that was giving CN difficulty. A street scene with nothing at stake, a testimony of a moment, of two strands of life.

One in movement and action, already in the next moment, in a hurry to get to the next few seconds that will happen anyway.

The other, more contemplative and who ends up seeing me, but without really doing so.
