My adopted mother worked at a nursery school for remote villages around Harrison Lake. One day she came to work to find a toddler had been left inside the school, wrapped in a blanket and little else. She said it was love at first sight. When no-one came forward to claim me she set about the adoption process and I wound up being raised by a wonderful loving couple.
Many decades later I met an elder at the centre who, on hearing my unique name, said he knew the beginning of my story.
My birth mother was one of the children at the residential school here; in her teen years she ran away, eventually returning to her village (140 km away) as a pregnant girl. He told me his mom was mid-wife at my birth. After a year and a half my birth mother turned me over to the nursery school and left the area.
We took a road trip, Uncle Herman & I, following the old routes up & back around to a small village cemetery where she and a still born baby boy are buried together.
I love this park where she once was, the views of the river and the mountains, the birds in the trees. I walk softly and remember.
