Varanasi is an ancient and sacred city imbued with religious symbolism. At the holy Dasaswamedh Ghat, young priests perform the Ganga aarti every evening at sunset. Their audience crowd the steps, or hire boats to watch from the water.

I was lucky: a lovely family invited me to share their space in a prime position on the steps, right in line of sight of the priests. This was my first aarti - and it was a magical experience.
