Rhodes(Greek: Ρόδος, Ródos, IPA: [ˈro̞ðo̞s]; Italian: Rodi; Ottoman Turkish: ردوس Rodos; Ladino: Rodi or Rodes) is a Greek island approximately 18 kilometers (11 mi) southwest of Turkey in eastern Aegean Sea. It is the largest of the Dodecanese islands in terms of both land area and population, with a population of 117,007[2] of which 53,709 resided in the homonymous capital city of the island.

Historically, Rhodes was famous worldwide for the Colossus of Rhodes, one of the Seven Wonders of the World. The medieval Old Town of the City of Rhodes has been declared a World Heritage Site. Today Rhodes is a tourist destination.

The island of Rhodes is shaped like a spearhead, 79.7 km (49.5 mi) long and 38 km (24 mi) wide, with a total area of approximately 1,400 square kilometers (541 sq mi) and a coastline of approximately 220 km (137 mi). The city of Rhodes is located at the northern tip of the island, as well as the site of the ancient and modern commercial harbors.

In the 1st century AD, the Emperor Tiberius spent a brief term of exile on Rhodes, and Saint Paul brought Christianity to the island. Rhodes reached her zenith in the third century, and was then by common consent the most civilized and beautiful city in Hellas. In 395, the long Byzantine Empire period began for Rhodes, when the Roman Empire was split and the eastern half gradually became a Greek empire. Although part of Byzantium for the next thousand years, Rhodes was nevertheless repeatedly attacked by various forces. It was first occupied by Muslim forces of Muawiyah I in 672. Much later, Rhodes was retrieved for the Byzantine Emperor Alexius I Comnenus during the First Crusade.

In 1309 the Byzantine era came to an end when the island was occupied by forces of the Knights Hospitaller. Under the rule of the newly named "Knights of Rhodes", the city was rebuilt into a model of the European medieval ideal. Many of the city's famous monuments, including the Palace of the Grand Master, were built during this period.

The strong walls which the Knights had built withstood the attacks of the Sultan of Egypt in 1444, and of Mehmed II in 1480. Ultimately, however, Rhodes fell to the large army of Suleiman the Magnificent in December 1522, long after the rest of the Byzantine empire had been lost. The few surviving Knights were permitted to retire to the Kingdom of Sicily. The Knights would later move their base of operations to Malta. The island was thereafter a possession of the Ottoman Empire for nearly four centuries.

Long time before the creation, one day the elements came to present themselves before the mighty. Everyone wanted to prevail over a large part of the earth. But the Mighty was wise and rightful, therefore he divided the earth fairly among the elements. The water dominated the cold world, which consisted entirely of ice. But there was also a hot world, full of embers and flames. Between this two worlds, there was a mysterious nothingness, an immense gaping emptiness without light and structures.

The two forces fire and ice were not satisfied with the division of the world, because each of them wanted to have more. In the cold world the water decided to divert a river in the direction of the mysterious world of nothingness. Their water turned into ice, which continued to expand in the direction of the nothingness. The same idea had the fire with the magma flows. And so the inevitable happened. In the world of nothingness fire and ice clashed!

Tremendous forces collided and caused an apocalyptic catastrophe of gargantuan proportions. The earth shook, and huge cracks appeared while in other places the earth were formed to huge mountains. Fire and lava veins cooled, the ice melted and the water began to boil. Vapour and mist rose into the air where they were transformed to charged and dark clouds. It started to rain and there were also storms and lightning. And then … there was silence … for a long time there was no more noise … and suddenly the light penetrated in this darkness, because the light wanted to see what had happened. The whole world shone and showed her beauty. There was heat, air, clouds, mountains, valleys and fields. The paradise was born!

I want to thank all very much for your "views", "Comments" and "Favourites" :-) The only thing that matters is that you have joy in this photo. Again, thank you :-)

Mt. Baker: 9,355 feet or 2,851 meters in elevation. The two black buttes to the right of the dome erupted leaving craters. The last eruption was about 700,000 years ago. In 1975 there was an event that led to melting glaciers and snow, but did not result in magma reaching the surface. That magma has been slowly cooling since then.

Norway's longest and deepest fjord, the Sognefjord is a geologic and panoramic marvel. The terrain soars upward from the watery depths of the North Atlantic, and many waterfalls punctuatue its edges with spray. The area is accessible only between May 18 and September 15.

The average width of the main branch of the Sognefjorden is about 4.5 kilometres (2.8 mi). Cliffs surrounding the fjord rise almost sheer from the water to heights of 1,000 metres (3,300 ft) and more.

A fjord is formed when a glacier cuts a U-shaped valley on the surrounding bedrock. Most fjords are deeper than the adjacent sea; Sognefjord, Norway, reaches as much as 1,300 m (4,265 ft) below sea level.

Verbier is a ski resort in the Swiss Alps, in the canton of Valais. It is part of the "Four Valleys" ski area, which includes the ski resorts of Verbier, Nendaz, Veysonnaz, La Tzoumaz, and Thyon. Verbier is recognized as one of the premiere "off-piste" resorts worldwide. Many top skiers have settled in the resort in order to take advantage of the steep slopes, varied conditions and vibrant nightlife. Verbier is also a popular holiday destination for celebrities, including Sarah Ferguson, Diana Ross, James Blunt and The Crown Prince Couple of Denmark: Frederik and Mary.

Verbier is located in the Val de Bagnes, in the Valais region of Switzerland. The resort lies on a south orientated terrace at around 1,500 metres facing the Grand Combin massif.

Verbier only has one access road, which starts in the town of Le Châble.

The Grand Combin is a mountain in the western Pennine Alps in Switzerland. With its 4,314 metres (14,154 ft) high summit it is one of the highest peaks in the Alps and the second most prominent of its range.

The Grand Combin is also a large glaciated massif consisting of several summits, among which three are above 4000 metres.

The Alps (French: Alpes; German: Alpen; Italian: Alpi; Romansh: Alps; Slovene: Alpe) is the name for one of the great mountain range systems of Europe, stretching from Austria and Slovenia in the east, through Italy, Switzerland, Liechtenstein and Germany to France in the west. The word "Alps" was taken via French from Latin Alpes (meaning "the Alps"), which may be influenced by the Latin words albus (white) or altus (high) or more likely a Latin rendering of a Celtic or Ligurian original.

The highest mountain in the Alps is Mont Blanc, at 4,808 metres (15,774 ft), on the Italian-French border. All the main peaks of the Alps can be found in the list of mountains of the Alps and list of Alpine peaks by prominence.

The Alps are generally divided into the Western Alps and the Eastern Alps. The division is along the line between Lake Constance and Lake Como, following the Rhine. The Western Alps are higher, but their central chain is shorter and curved; they are located in Italy, France and Switzerland. The Eastern Alps (main ridge system elongated and broad) belong to Austria, Germany, Italy, Liechtenstein, Slovenia and Switzerland.

The Alps are a classic example of what happens when a temperate area at lower altitude gives way to higher elevation terrain. Elevations around the world which have cold climates similar to those found in polar areas have been called alpine. A rise from sea level into the upper regions of the atmosphere causes the temperature to decrease. The effect of mountain chains on prevailing winds is to carry warm air belonging to the lower region into an upper zone, where it expands in volume at the cost of a proportionate loss of heat, often accompanied by the precipitation of moisture in the form of snow or rain.

On our walk through the Roxborough State Park, Colorado, United States.

The state park is known for dramatic red sandstone formations. Located in Douglas County 25 miles (40 km) south of Denver, Colorado, the 3,339-acre (13.51 km2) park was established in 1975. In 1980 it was recognized as a National Natural Landmark because of the number of ecological systems and geological formations. It is also a State Historic Site and National Cultural District because of the number of archaeological sites.

Roxborough State Park is a designated Colorado Natural Area and National Natural Landmark for its 300 million year old red sandstone Fountain Formation that tilt at a 60 degree angle. The park includes great examples of exposed Precambrian to Late Mesozoic hogback, monolithic and spire formations from the Permian, Pennsylvanian and Cretaceous age. Carpenter Peak's exposed granite is from Precambrian era.

The park consists of forests of ponderosa pine and Douglas fir, prairie land, and woodlands that support many forms of wildlife. There are 145 bird, over 50 butterfly and moth, and 11 amphibian and reptile species. Mammals commonly found in the park include black bear, coyote, deer, elk, fox, mountain lion, prairie dog, and rabbit. Sources of water include Little Willow Creek, Willow Creek and Mill Gulch. Elevations range from 5,900 to 7,280 feet (1,800 to 2,220 m).

There are six hiking trails in Roxborough State Park, a network of easy to moderate trails that also connect to Douglas County trail system, Pike National Forest and Waterton Canyon trails. (Wikipedia)

have a fabulous weekend, my friends!

Truth be told, I'm jealous of Jayme's dogs and his fantastic photo's he takes of them. So I set out to take my own dog's portrait photo. First, I went out to the garage and dug out the box buried deep in the dark at the back. Then I opened the box, took out my dog, blew the dust off of him and put him down. Next I set up the shot, told the dog to sit and went to get the camera. Everything was all good until I went to snap the shot. As soon as I aimed the camera at him, he turned around, said Look, I'm Sally Fields as the Flying Nun and flew off over the fence and out of sight. Typical dog.

It is a very delightful recreation area because of the scenic location. (Out of 3 single shots.)

Hardly anyone has a bad word to say about cosmos; most sources indicate that they just keep on coming. As lovely as they are, Cosmos are sometimes described as a weeds because it heavily self-seeds. Well, sometimes even weeds fail to thrive. Speaking of weeds, control of them during cosmos germination time is critical to the flower's survival.

Cosmos seed germination is reduced when temps are above 80°F or below 65°F, so maybe many of the seeds did not make it through the winter. Or it was too hot during optimal germination time.

Another thought: Cosmos needs no fertilizer; in fact, it prefers ordinary to poor soil. In fact, too-rich soil can result in weak stems. Save the good soil and fertilizer for other plants!

Cosmos likes full sun—at least 8 hours per day of intense light.

Enjoy !! (next year)
