Came to photograph the sun rise near Mt Hood which is just to the left of the Burlington Northern Railroad Bridge near the center of this photo (see note); but luckily the mountain was hidden by a layer of fog (see first comment below). Three horizontal shots distortion corrected with Fisheye Hemi stitched together using Photoshop CS5 File>Photomerge (Cylindrical). Even nicer when you stand on the Bridge. N70511-13e2

Durga is a female Goddess with a penchant for slaying demons and commoners for their wrongdoings. A popular deity amongst the Indians, it takes new avatars with the Bengalis during the Durga Puja period. In Bengal and elsewhere where the Bengalis reside, huge idols come up for worship with a bit of modern day story telilng thrown in.

Here I guess you all know what Avatar Durga has taken here.

The Durga Puja begins today and will continue till Dussehra.

Happy Pujo!

It was a wonderful Summer evening with beautiful light on the lake Müritz, (Müritz National Park), Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Germany

The Müritz ([ˈmyʁɪts]; from Slavic "little sea") is a lake in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, northern Germany. Its area is 117 km², which makes it the second largest lake of Germany (after Lake Constance) and the largest inland lake entirely within Germany. Its maximum depth is 31 metres. It is fed and drained by the river Elde. Part of the Müritz and adjacent forests and wetlands are protected by the Müritz National Park. The former Müritz district was named after the lake. The biggest towns bordering the lake are Waren (Müritz) and Röbel, both major centres of tourism in the Mecklenburg Lake District. (Wikipedia)

Who said wildlife photography is hard? All you need to do is to define "wildlife" a little more broadly.

I am pretty sure this shot is nothing but cliche if you count retro car, cute dog and photogs reflections.

HCS, everyone!

Another shot from the spectacular sunrise we had a few mornings ago. A previous shot from a couple of days earlier than this showed the sun rising immediately behind the Bass Rock. In another few days the sun will rise behind Berwick Law (as viewed from Dysart shore). In this shot the small cruise ship MSC Lirica can also be seen heading for South Queensferry.

Panorama blue hour shot taken from the City Hall at Southwark, London. On the right you have the Tower Bridge, on the left the Central London skyline and in the center Tower Hill. Lots of tourists and people walking around in this area, that's why some of them are still a bit visible. The big fat building under construction is 20 Fenchurch Street (160 meters tall). I recently read that it will feature a sky garden on top with free public access. Should be interesting, defenitely for the urban photographers out there.

Jiráskův bridge is the sixth bridge over the Vltava river downstream of Prague connecting Jirasek square right bank of the Prague Old Town and Left Bank district of Smichov.

Its construction was started in 1929 by architect Vlastislav Hofman and Ing. Francis Mencl. As a concrete material was used, five leading pillar is 4.6 m wide lined with granite blocks. The bridge is 310.6 meters long and 21 m wide. Arc has six fields with a span of 45 to 51 m surface of the outer surfaces of artificial stone, plaster, concrete railings and lighting columns are glazed patio surface. Both are located beachhead 13.5 m high pylons with decorative fountains and obelisks. The bridge was put into operation in two stages. First it was the middle of the tram rails in 1931 and then 18th October 1933 the rest. For tram rails proved to be unnecessary and were removed. After the bridge, but resulted only in Prague trolley line connecting both banks of the Vltava.

Someone must have planted these in the White Lake meadow and it's a very effective eye catching little flower! It seems to like growing in Colorado and there are not too many images on flickr! I had a hard time figuring out what it was but I think I'll be adding a few to the overall image pool. Pretty much SOOC except for crop and general adjusts.

Thanks everyone for all the warm comments and emails. I've been pretty tied up with marching band and tonight I'll be back to shooting the team. Just needed a little something new to explore for a bit!

Get Pushed: enveehaze gave me the following rolling challenge:

Hi Jonathan - I enjoyed looking thru your photos. You have some lovely images. I noticed you seem to focus on people. For your challenge, I would like you to focus on the inanimate instead. Please do a macro. Focus on the ordinary details of an object that make it extraordinary. I hope this is a fun and inspiring challenge for you! I look forward to seeing the result.

I've had similar challenges a few times now, some version of - take an abstract, closeup, no people shot - and it always gives me trouble. That's a good thing of course; it pushes me out of my comfort zone. So here is my attempt - I cheated a little but I also wouldn't have taken it this way without the push. So, as always, a learning experience.

For anybody interested, the challenge came from a Flickr group called Get Pushed, which you can find here: www.flickr.com/groups/getpushed/

Laguna Trans Nissan (fleet No 2010) and J.A.M Trans Nissan DVB-13x in the Lawton layover area of Manila, Philippines.

In this photo the bulls are nearing the finishing post and they had to turn left to avoid running into the embankment straight ahead.

Looks like this is what is going to happen now. - I mean that the bulls are going straight on to the embankment.

The runner on the left ought to have controlled the bull to make them turn but handling heaving and seething masses of bull power running in the mud is not at all easy.

The people are already scattering and running for cover. Not to miss the vidographer in the lungi who is recording the run.

-----------------------------------------------------

Adoor in Kerala holds its famous Bull Races every year around the time of Onam. It is a celebration of agrarian existence and is carried on without any grants or aid from the Government. This is a spectacular fiesta of rural Kerala. There are 2-3 other such events that are held in Kerala.

Two racing bulls are hitched together and three men come into action. Two racers with lead ropes on either side of the bulls who try to control the direction and speed if possible and one often obscured by sprays of mud and water, a jockey who rides on a small flat strip of wood.

The bulls race ahead with the men keeping desperately abreast of the thundering hooves. At the end of the racing track there is a 4-6 feet embankment of earth which acts as a protection and a marker for the bulls. The embankment gets totally crowded with onlookers. The bull racers need to turn the bull around and do a 360 degree here but most times that effort fails as the bulls in their racing frenzy would be uncontrollable.

I have no idea on the current status of the bull races. There are enough organisations howling to stop such races but the Supreme Court of India in a judgement a few months ago allowed bull/bullock cart races to go on in Punjab. So chances are that the tradition may still live on.

Since leaving the Midwest last year, I’ve been meaning to photograph the Harbor Drive Pedestrian Bridge in downtown San Diego. The bridge connects the convention center with Petco Park (home to San Diego’s Major League Baseball team the Padres). At 550 feet, the bridge is one of the longest self-anchored pedestrian suspension bridges in the world and is supposed to look like a sail to fit in with San Diego's nautical history.

I took this photograph from the top floor of a parking garage. I like this view since it not only includes the new Harbor Drive Pedestrian Bridge, but also Petco Park, the new Central Library and the East Village District, which is San Diego's largest and most rapidly developing neighborhood.
