The Burg Gutenfels (also known as castle Kaub) is a castle 110m above the town of Kaub in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. It was build in 1220. It was used with Pfalzgrafenstein Castle in the middle of the Rhein and the fortified city of Kaub on the far side to provide an impenetrable toll zone for the Holy Roman Emperor until Prussia purchased the area (1866) and ended this toll in 1867. The Castle is in part of the Rhine Gorge, a UNESCO World Heritage Site added in 2002.

Kaub (old spelling: Caub) is a town in Germany, state Rhineland-Palatinate, district Rhein-Lahn-Kreis. It is part of the municipality (Verbandsgemeinde) Loreley. It is located on the right bank of the Rhine, approx. 50 km west from Wiesbaden.

It has a Roman Catholic and an Evangelical church, and a statue of General Blücher. The trade mainly consists of the wines of the district. (Wikipedia)

One of my goals for 2013 was to take some long exposure night photos and to get some shots of lightning. So here is another experimental shot. This was the first night I ever tried talking lightning photos...

This photo was taken from the observation walkway on "city key", Sarasota Florida across from the Sarasota Sailing Squadron, close to the Mote Marine Aquarium facing toward Coon Key.St. Armands Circle is to the right. The tall building in the center is Plymouth Harbor, a local retirement community.

This was a GPS-based hiking route that took me almost 4 hours for 12 kilometers...from Bergen aan Zee via the Kerf (a kind of whole in the dunes) near Schoorl back to Bergen aan Zee. GPS file on request.

The Grand Canal (Italian: Canal Grande, Venetian: Canałasso) is a canal in Venice, Italy. It forms one of the major water-traffic corridors in the city. Public transport is provided by water buses (Italian: vaporetti) and private water taxis, and many tourists explore the canal by gondola. At one end, the canal leads into the lagoon near the Santa Lucia railway station and the other end leads into Saint Mark Basin; in between, it makes a large reverse-S shape through the central districts (sestieri) of Venice. It is 3,800 m long, 30–90 m wide, with an average depth of five meters (16.5 ft).

Because most of the city's traffic goes along the Canal rather than across it, only one bridge crossed the canal until the 19th century, the Rialto Bridge. Palazzo dei Camerlenghi is a Renaissance palace in Venice, northern Italy, located in the sestiere (quarter) of San Polo. It faces the Canal Grande, near the Rialto Bridge. The palace was built from 1525 to 1528 under design by Guglielmo dei Grigi, who was inspired by the style of Mauro Codussi and Pietro Lombardo. It was the seat of several financial magistrates, including the Camerlenghi whom it takes its name from, the Consuls of the Traders and the Supra-Consuls of the Traders. Due to this function, the lower floor was used as a jail for the insolvents: the location nearby the crowded Rialto Bridge served as an admonition for the people passing there. The palace currently houses the regional seat of the Italian Comptroller and Auditor General. The palace has a pentagonal plan which follows the shore of the Canal Grande, with three floors. It has tall windows with centrings, divided by false columns and decorated with friezes. There were once polyhcrome marble and porphyry slabs, now lost. This was taken through my bedroom window in Central Florida, USA. Handheld at 1/60 sec.

I bought a packet of mixed sunflower seeds in the Spring & it's been fascinating to watch the different varieties bloom. I've had small ones, tall ones, multi headed ones, ruby ones but I still love the traditional ones. This one has grown so tall I would need a step-ladder to capture it face-to face.

The Hondsbossche Zeewering is one of the highest dykes in the world dikes. This gigantic dike connects the dunes between Kamperduin and Petten and protects the Zijper Polder against water. This Polder is over 400 years old and is the oldest part of the Netherlands which is drained. Over the dike, which is nearly 6 km long, you can enjoy hiking, cycling or running next to the North Sea. Petten could have been founded in 739. The name refers to the three wells Dutch: putten which are located there. There was already a mention of a sand dike in 1388 between Petten and Callantsoog. In the St. Elizabeth's flood in 1421, Petten was entirely washed away, and the dunes were damaged. It ranks 10th in the list of top ten worst floods in history. A number of villages were swallowed by the flood and were lost, causing between 2,000 and 10,000 casualties. The dike breaks and floods caused widespread devastation in Zeeland and Holland. An additional sleeper dike was built behind the dunes in 1432 and from 1506 active coastal defense took place. Even so, more than 100 houses were washed away in 1625, plus the church of Petten. The construction of the Hondsbossche zeewering began in 1793. Strengthening the dike using sand seems to be the best option and can count on a lot of support because in this way a lovely beach will be created with new possibilities for nature, recreation and water sports. Experts in the field of coastal protection confirm that spraying sand offers many benefits in the long term as well. The bike path along the coast is very much appreciated by the locals and tourists. North and south of the Hondsbossche Zeewering are many kilometers of bike paths, through the beautiful dunes, with its forests, sand dunes and heaths.

The embankment of the Hondsbossche Zeewering - dyke stands between the wind and the North Sea, and agricultural communities of Petten on the other side. The dyke was build after the the St. Elizabeth's flood in 1421. Petten was entirely washed away, and the dunes were damaged. Now it's is one of the highest dykes in the world dikes and a great place to enjoy hiking, cycling or running.

De Hondsbossche Zeewering is één van de hoogste dijken ter wereld. Deze gigantische dijk verbindt de duinen tussen Kamperduin en Petten en beschermd de Zijper Polder tegen het water. Deze Polder is meer dan 400 jaar oud en is daarmee het oudste stukje Nederland wat is drooggelegd. Over de dijk, die bijna 6 km lang is, kan men heerlijk wandelen, fietsen of hardlopen, direct aan de Noordzee. Dit fietspad langs de kust wordt zeer gewaardeerd door recreanten en toeristen. De provincie is daarin tegemoet gekomen aan de wens van bewoners. Ten noorden en zuiden van de Hondsbossche Zeewering liggen vele kilometers fietspaden, dwars door de schone duinen, met zijn bossen, zandverstuivingen en heidevelden. Bij de St. Elisabethsvloed van 1421 werden de duinen tussen Kamperduin en Petten weggeslagen. Na de storm werd er tussen de twee plaatsen een dijk aangelegd, de Hondsbossche Zeewering. Vermoedelijk werd de ramp veroorzaakt door een bijzonder zware noordwesterstorm, gevolgd door een zeer hoge stormvloed. Van springvloed zoals bij de Watersnood van 1953 was toen geen sprake, maar het natte weer was er de oorzaak van dat het opperwater afkomstig van de rivieren nog zeer hoog stond. De dijkdoorbraken en overstromingen richtten in Zeeland en Holland grote verwoestingen aan. Het aantal slachtoffers is in de loop van de tijd door mythevorming opgelopen tot 100.000. Schattingen geven aan dat mogelijk tussen tweeduizend en tienduizen mensen de dood vonden. Net als vele andere dorpen aan de Noord-Hollandse kust, is ook Petten herhaaldelijk landinwaarts herbouwd. De inwoners van Petten leefden van de visserij, landbouw en strandvonderij. In het algemeen was het leven in het oude Petten redelijk welvarend. De Hondsbossche Zeewering vormt één geheel met de veel kortere Pettemer Zeewering. Vlak langs de dijk ligt het vogelreservaat De Putten. Dit gebied is een geliefde broed- en overnachtingsplaats voor verschillende vogelsoorten. Om die reden is het gebied dan ook niet vrij toegankelijk. In het domein liggen ondiepe vijvertjes, die zijn ontstaan door het afgraven van grond ten behoeve van herstellingen aan de Hondsbossche Zeewering.

En verano Peña Ubiña es bastante accesible, sólo hace falta salvar un desnivel cercano a 1200 m desde el pueblo de Torrebarrio.

En el primer plano podemos ver el sendero que baja de Peña Ubiña, y alcanza las praderías del collado del Ronzón, después de dejar atrás el inclinado y serpenteante sendero entre rocas que baja de la cumbre. Enfrente tenemos Ubiña La Pequeñas con 2197 m de altitud.

In summer Peña Ubiña is quite accessible, just need to save a slope close to 1200 m from the village of Torrebarrio.

In the foreground we can see the path down Ubiña Peña, and reaches the pastures of the hill of Ronzón, after leaving behind the steep and winding path through rocks coming down from the summit. Before us Ubiña The Small with 2197 m altitude.

Even in the middle of a desert, you can find a slight piece of Heaven. To bad the fish were rude though. I didn't even know fish HAD fingers, let alone a middle one. I didn't do anything either. Nope. Not a thing. I was totally innocent, minding my own business. I swear.

Fine, I stuck my toe in the water and my feet stank.

Cliche Saturday HSS

This was another find on a recent Collembola hunt, this is a male Calvatomina rufescens, I experimented with a blue background in this one. There is a fallen tree near where I look for these that makes a convenient outdoor studio, I rest the subject on the tree and I can then place a background behind the subject, I often use a small LED to throw a bit of light on the subject and the tree makes for a very stable work surface. This guy was a very small one at just over 1mm at a guess, also one of the prettiest examples I have found to date :o)

Anyway, this is an 11 image handheld focus stack, it is a rare opportunity to get a stack of one of these as they can be quite active little fellows. Again I used my MP-E at x5 on my 1.4x teleconverter and a 12mm extension tube. These are supposed to something of a rarity in the UK, but there are loads at the local woods, it could be they are under recorded :o)

I found this Leaf-footed Bug on one of the reflective glass windows outside the Sun Room of my home in Central Florida. When I looked at it from just the right angle, I was able to get its mirror image in the shot, as well. I don't do a lot of shooting during the summer so it's always nice to have a critter like this be so cooperative.

I believe this is Acanthocephala declivis but I'm not certain. I'd welcome any feedback on the ID.

I know, it has been done before, but I hadn't done it yet. It was pretty slippery to get to that place. The way down was much easier and from a different slope - now I know how to get up there. This is my first picture on full frame from my own camera. A classic, taken with another classic.

The waterfall is 60 m high and the cliffs you can see marked the coastline once upon a distant time.

A Pedra Gávea nesta imagem me lembrou o Monte Olimpo, por isto a escolha desta canção.

A foto principal foi feita no final da tarde de sábado quando uma frente fria começou a chegar na cidade cobrindo de nuvens ate onde a vista alcançava, deixando de fora como ilhas num mar de espuma apenas as montanhas mais altas.

A Pedra Bonita local onde foi tirada as fotos fica 176 metros acima da rampa de salto de Asa Delta, para subir bastar tem pelo menos um pouco de disposição e boa vontade para subir um trilha mediana por cerca de 30 a 40 minutos, mas a visão lá de cima compensa qualquer esforço físico, mesmo que encontre o tempo assim coberto por este Mar de Nuvens.

* Todas as fotos abaixo foram tiradas da Pedra Bonita em uma outra ocasião que la estive e nelas podemos ver o que há por debaixo das nuvens da foto principal, a praia que vemos na 3ª e 4ª fotos é a Praia de São Conrado e na ultima foto vemos ao fundo a Praia de Ipanema.

Echinacea purpurea is native to the North American prairie and one of my favorite Summer perennials. This wonderful sun lover needs very little care and is enjoyed for months. It's showy purplish-pink and white flowers attract butterflies and bees all Summer long. Followed by the seedpods that little songbirds and goldfinches love in late Summer. Then they reseed freely and become great passalong plants. Joyful Summer Coneflower :)

Taken on a wee jaunt through Alexandria and Zetland the other day. Alas, I didn't make to to the industrial areas until the sun was almost gone and then there were way too many people about to linger too long in any one spot. Ah, well, but now I know a few new places to go back to and check out when I next have a chance, always good. Plus, I got to walk through parts of town I've never walked through or even often been to before. Always gotta love that!

Though I've seen pictures of Crater Lake for many years, I had never seen it in person before today. You cannot believe the deep jewel tone of blue until you see it yourself ! The lake is one of the purest and clearest in the world. It is self-contained - no streams flow in or out of the caldera. It is fed entirely by the annual snowmelt by the 44 feet annual snowfall ! There are still a few patches of snow here and there around the rim.

It would be nice to be here when there are big puffy clouds in the sky, so we'll just have to come back again. The season here is very short - June through September. It is snowed in the rest of the year and they do not snow plow the rim drive.

This is a 7-image panorama covering just under 180 degrees.

I've heard from others that mosquitoes can be vicious here; but we saw only a few. They enjoyed snacking on my tender skin until I slathered it with Deet ! I think the skeeter problem diminishes after most of the snow is melted and there is no standing water.

If you have a moment, look at the largest size to see the astonishing amount of beautiful geological detail created 7,700 years ago by a violent volcano !

PANORAMA DAL CAMPANILE DI GIOTTO.

A fianco del Duomo si trova il Campanile di Giotto, uno dei campanili più belli d'Italia. Alto 84 metri e di forma squadrata, risplende di marmi bianchi, rossi e verdi. Raggiungendo la cima del campanile, dopo 414 scalini, si potrà ammirare da vicino la Cupola del Brunelleschi e osservare un bellissimo panorama della città.

Ich denke auch das Viadukt, mich irritierte der Satz „Es scheint, als stünden sie trotzig und wollten nicht weichen, weil schließlich sie sich zuerst hier niedergelassen haben."

After I was taking the photos with the ND filter, the sun came out for a really short time. I liked the contrast between the warm light on the rocks in front, to the cold, metallic look of the background.

Quedlinburg is a town located north of the Harz mountains, in the district of Harz in the west of Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. In 1994 the medieval court and the old town was set on the UNESCO world heritage list.

In the innermost parts of the town a wide selection of half-timbered buildings from at least five different centuries are to be found (including a 14th-century structure, one of Germany's oldest), while around the outer fringes of the old town there are wonderful examples of Jugendstil buildings, dating from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Quedlinburg is one of the best-preserved medieval and renaissance towns in Europe, having escaped major damage in World War II. (Wikipedia)
