The sunlight was brief and I wanted to capture the sunbeams. But the light was both so strong and so fleeting I just couldn't get things balanced properly. However in my biased opinion it is such a stunning setting I will post it for the benefit of those who have not previously seen Dinorwic slate quarry in Snowdonia

Shrek: (to Donkey) WHY...are you following me?

Donkey: Oh, I'll tell you why. (singing) 'Cause I'm all alone; there's no one here beside me! My problems have all come; there's no one to deride meeeeee! Butcha gotta have FRIENDS--

Shrek: STOP! SINGING! Well, it's no wonder you don't have any friends!

Donkey: Wow! Only a true friend would be that truly honest.

- got this Shrek and Donkey from my trip to Universal Studios with my wife in Los Angeles, USA 3 years ago and it remain as my most favorite figurines from all my collections in my apartment showcase cabinet. Reason : These 2 figurines reminded us of the happy moments that we shared together before our marriage.

JOHNNY:))

Salut !

- Prrrrr... * hausse des épaules et allume Netflix*

The forest looks so different this time of year. The leaves are off the deciduous canopy and shrubs. More light is reaching the undergrowth. The main points of green are the mosses, ferns and conifers. Beautiful all the same.

100x outdoor adventures #45

My son and his partner have been living with us for the last five months having moved up from York and, just to make matters that tiny bit more complicated, they brought their two rabbits with them. What fun it is chasing them around the garden trying to stop them eating all the flowers... They now have a flat (my son and his partner, not the rabbits) and move out in the next week or so. Anyone fancy coming round for a party? :)

Two words that we use a lot to decribe our own country, the Netherlands. The 'flat' part definitely is true except for some scattered 'hills' here and there, the highest point in our country is 321 meter.....

The 'wet' part is more a like a complaint because as far as I know, of every 24 hours most of them are dry and not wet......

(I'll try to catch up with your posts, I'm nearly threee weeks behind....)

We left Queenstown to make our way to Milford Sounds. Stopped in Te Anau for morning tea and to buy some lunch for our day trip. We we will be staying at Te Anau for the night.

Arrived at Milford Sounds just in time for our boat trip on the 'Milford Sound Nature Cruise" on the 'Milford Marner': For More Info: www.realjourneys.co.nz/en/experiences/cruises/milford-sou...

Day five of our fast trip around the South Island with my friends from the UK. November 5, 2013 New Zealand.

Milford Sound is the most northerly of the fiords indenting the south-western coastline of the South Island; it occupies the trunk portion of a formerly glaciated valley system cut deeply below the surrounding mountains. The mountains rise to heights of 6,000 ft above sea level, and the deepest point of the fiord, near Stirling Falls, is 1,280 ft below sea level. The Arthur and Cleddau Rivers occupy the Milford Valley and enter the head of the fiord; a delta built across the mouth of the Arthur Valley by the Cleddau River is slowly cutting off part of the Sound to form a freshwater lake. The Arthur Valley is occupied by Lake Ada, 3 miles long, which is dammed up partly by old glacial moraine and partly by landslides from the walls of Arthur Valley. From its head, the Sound follows an irregular course for 9 miles to the sea and is joined by Bowen, Sinbad, Harrison, and Stirling Rivers whose valleys were formerly occupied by tributary glaciers. Harrison Valley is still occupied at its head by a small glacier that terminates at an estimated height of 4,500 ft on the south-east slopes of Mt. Pembroke (6,710 ft). Stirling Falls (480 ft), and Bowen Falls (520 ft) spout from hanging valleys over near-vertical faces to the Sound. The inner reach of the Sound has very steep walls reaching heights of 5,560 ft at Mitre Peak and 4,150 ft at the Lion. Like many of the other fiords, Milford is deeper in the inner reaches than about the entrance, and about 1 mile seaward off Stirling Falls the deep basin rises abruptly to a sill at 360 fathoms. Beyond this the floor of the Sound forms a basin a little deeper than 360 ft, which extends out for 2 miles on to the shelf bordering the west coast; the western end of this basin is separated from the indented continental slope by a sill in 240 ft. The basin and sills were formed by glacial erosion which was a result of the confining by the steep fiord walls of the former valley glacier.

Milford Sound offers what is probably the most spectacular fiord scenery in the southern hemisphere, and the well-known and striking views of Mitre Peak from the head of the fiord form the subject of innumerable paintings, postcards, posters, and pictorial postage stamps. The area is well served with tourist amenities, and the luxurious Hotel Milford is situated at the head of the fiord. Visitors may travel to Milford either by car or bus on the Te Anau – Eglinton – Homer Tunnel road, or by plane from Queenstown, Te Anau, or further afield, or by walking the Milford Track from Te Anau. Tourist ships occasionally visit Milford but there has been no regular service by sea for many years. Apart from the amusements provided by the hotel, the attractions of Milford are confined to sightseeing, short walks about the head of the fiord, launch trips and sea fishing and, for the more energetic, tramping and mountaineering. But the sheer impressiveness of the scenery is sufficient to make a visit well worthwhile even if it is only to the head of the fiord.

The first settlers at Milford were Donald Sutherland, J. McKay, and J. Malcolm who, in 1877–80 built permanent huts both at the head of the fiord and at Anita Bay near the entrance. At first they were interested in deposits of asbestos and greenstone at Anita Bay, but in later years Sutherland married and settled down in the homestead at the head of the fiord: By Bryce Leslie Wood, M.SC., New Zealand Geological Survey, Dunedin.

This picture is #60 in the 100 Strangers Project - Round 2

Meet Ismail and Morgan.

When I first saw this lovely couple strolling and chatting I knew I wanted them to be a part of the 100 Strangers project. But I hesitated and as has happened many times I lost them only for them to reappear on my radar a while later.

Somethings are just meant to happen - and will happen when the time is right. This time I did not take a chance and interrupting them made my request. Both Ismail and Morgan were caught by surprise but to my surprise they were even more friendlier than I expected them to be. And despite the fact that they both didn't really like being photographed, and definitely not in these 'random' circumstances by a random stranger they sportingly agreed to be a part of the project. Not only that - despite not being very demonstrative in public - they opened up enough to show closeness in public that I forgot I was photographing strangers

Ismail is of Iranian descent, a handsome man with twinkling eyes and a rather strong personality enhanced by the beard, He perfectly complemented the beautiful lady who really stood out with her soft calm vibe and an old world charm. Ismail is a PHD student and Morgan is working on her masters - my first couple shoot with two academics. This is probably one of my most interactive stranger encounters - we talked about a wide variety of topics including Ismail's project (about the children in immigrant communities and their negotiation skills) and I did candidly admit that some of our conversation was far above my league. Unfortunately due to the free wheeling nature of our conversation I could not retain a lot (which I regret) other than the fact that it was a enjoyable stranger encounter. with a lot of smiles and laughs (partly due to the relative weirdness of it all)

On the photography front some of the pics turned out quite blurry - but it was one of those cases where the overall tone and vibe of the pics made up for the technical weaknesses.

Thanks a lot Ismail and Morgan for doing these pictures and being such great sports. I really had a wonderful time and hope you like the pictures. Wish you all the very best for your future.

Helen and I wearing contrasting styles does highlight the scope we girls have when it comes to coordinating our outfits. Have to say though that Helen does wear some very pretty clothes, that blouse is simply gorgeous.

Dokra Artisan of Bikna....... The Last Dokra Village

Dokra (or Dhokra) is one of the earliest known methods of non-ferrous metal casting known to human civilization. The tribal art of dokra craft is an ancient process of producing metalware by the ‘lost wax casting’ (cire perdue) process.

A wax pattern with all its improved particulars of designs and decorations is made on a clay centre. A small amount of coats of delicately ready clay paste is applied over the wax replica and dried out in the shadow. It is then covered with a thick layer of clay keeping a hole on top. Molten metal is poured into the mould to replace wax layer. The cast is then taken out to give finishing touches and perfected with immense love, care and creativity. The dexterity of Dokra is exclusive in that no two Dokra products are alike.

The word Dokra is also used to specify a group of nomadic craftsmen scattered over Bengal, Orissa, Andhra Pradesh and Raigarh and Bastar districts of Chhattisgarh in central India and are identified by their marvelously fashioned and ornamented metal goods. Of all craftsmen in West Bengal, these metal smiths are generally most mistreated as social outcasts. Consequently they are called Dokras. Some of the regions in Bengal which are famed for Dokra metal craft are Burdwan, Midnapore, Birbhum, Purulia and Bankura. Dokra artisans of Bankura, where 36 families in all and now the largest cluster in West Bengal live in a small village called Bikna just outside Bankura town.

The main hallmark of Dokra craft is primitive simplicity, charming folk motifs, a rustic beauty and imaginative designs and patterns. Their aesthetic senses and skills have undergone a lot of evolution over the years. Untutored in recognized institutions, the talent and artistic wisdom of these people are the outcome of the instinctive and inborn creativity and intuitive innovative sense evolved over thousands of years.
