I moved the lights around a bit and got more shadows in this one. The possibilities are endless!! I also had to do some spot removal of the tiny little bubbles and pecks of dirt so if you try this make sure everything is very clean! and don't let your cat come near!
An amazing moment in the landscape: as the sun rose behind the hill in the distance, brilliant light illuminated the foreground fog, the tree casting rays of light and shadow in the mist.

Strongly geometrical dark monochrome architecture. This former Central Military Hospital (Tilkka) in Helsinki was built in 1936 and it represents functionalist architecture.

A very busy Monday but I made time to sneak away for a little bit to get a couple shots in. None really stood out to me as a favourite, but I liked the way this one looked in black and white.
The contrast between dark and light works for me, so I'm going to go with it.
Hope everyone has had a good day.

I was really excited when I saw this through my hand-lens and very relieved when I managed to transport the leaf to my camera set-up and get at least one half-decent shot. The leaf then blew away!
I'm assuming (because I've been seeing some less mature individuals in our Staffordshire garden) that this again is Katianna nr schotti. It could be a mature (or close to mature) female, but I'm really not sure. It was a good start to the week!
methinks this is my cliche saturday picture because how many different ways can you capture the snow falling???

A jumper surfaces and gasps as she comes up in the icy lake water during the Penguin Plunge held at City Beach in Whitefish Montana as part of the City’s annual Winter Carnival. The plunge is held to benefit Special Olympics and is sponsored by Local Law Enforcement agencies and businesses. Over 130 people jumped and raised more than $40,000!
When the sunset is over and the lights begins to change, and the mist start to raise from the vales, from the top of a mountain everything assumes a mystic halo. The Appennine mountains seem islands in the sea, and the Alps a far cliff. Can you imagine that several ages ago the situation was exactly this one, but with water instead of mist?

Third stormfront this spring. They all have been great to take pictures of. But this I will special memorize because it has been LOUD! If anyone is interested here is a (very badly filmed) video of the front: www.flickr.com/photos/lichtmaedel2/17564201811/
Have a great week!

Candid street photography from Glasgow, Scotland. Suiting a widescreen crop, I just loved this moment of calm in the bustle of the city. His legs forming a letter M amidst the lines of the steps and column, and his idea of peace and quiet being, I assume, some music in his cans. Enjoy full screen by pressing 'L'.
...for something completely different. The BH bought some figurines for our mantle this year. They're quite a cute family and I couldn't help breaking out the nifty fifty and taking a few shots.
Thanks as always for your support and inspiration. My doctor says I'll be fine. This afternoon we're taking the kiddos for their followup and hopefully will hear good news then too.
I think this gal is smiling because she can see Friday in the distance.

If I say it in May, I might seem impatient. If it’s next June, it’s obvious you’ll be busy..

Leaving Waterloo station in London the other day, I was quite taken by this ‘ancient and modern’ view – the spire of St John’s church in the foreground, and One Blackfriars behind it.
St John’s church was built in 1822; One Blackfriars (also nicknamed ‘The Vase’) was completed in 2018.

Mine is a dark roast coffee with sugar and cream to cut the bitterness of the dark roast.
It's a turbulent cycle of sweetening and smoothing the bite of the dark roasted beans.
So, I'll take the cream in my coffee with some sugar also please.

I often get asked for "tips and tricks" so I'll try to address that here. I mostly do nature/landscape images so my points will apply to that genre.
1) Know where you're going before you go. Scout out your locations at midday or in those times when shooting isnt good. Ask permission from landowners--explain to them that you'll be coming very early. I find a compass helpful so that I can see which direction the sun will be rising. Figure out where you're going to park your car ( or canoe ! ).
2) Mornings are generally better than evenings. There's less wind, its colder, there are no people, and there's often mist. Evenings are still good but may conflict with social engagements (like dinner). Plan to get there 1/2 an hour before sunrise.
3) Lay out your gear the night before. I like to have everything ready so that I can just jump into my clothes and head out. I have my boots, coat, hat, headlamp, mitts right by the door.
4) Lenses. I'm using the Sigma 10-20mm or the Tokina 12-24 for most landscape stuff. They're both good. I'd take the Sigma over the Tokina only because it goes wider. The other lens that I use alot is an old push-pull Nikon 80-200 f2.8. Both Canon and Nikon make great, cheap 50mmf1.8 lenses. The whole Canon vs Nikon thing is silly--they're both excellent.
5) Tripod. Expect to pay alot for this. Get a pro model. Dont compromise. You'll also need a remote/cord thing so you dont touch the camera.
6) Filters. Either get a set of ND Grads ( see www.singh-ray.com/grndgrads.html ) or learn to bracket & blend (see www.flickr.com/photos/mr_fabulous/22132049/in/set-354266/ )
7) Get out and take pictures...you'll learn alot just by going out
8) I found this magazine : www.digitalphotouser.co.uk/ to be packed with good useful info...this single issue ( #80) on landscapes had all the practical info that you need. I also found Freeman Patterson's book very helpful: www.freemanpatterson.com/book2.htm
9) I realise its become a bit of a cliche, but the "rule of thirds" is important in this genre (just look at this picture). I also try to use lines and shapes to lead the eye. And I think images need to be balanced.
For the group Macro Monday, this week the theme was "Things that go together".
It's not very original, but I chose salt and pepper, but I decided to show one grain (or crystal) of salt, and one speck of pepper together.
This was done with reverse-lens macro, and focus stacking. I had to do a lot of erasing of extra lines etc because the focus was so close, each increment of changing focus moved the lens and created focus shadows. (I wish there were a program which could handle that problem.)
So, Happy Macro Mondays (HMM) everyone!
Blowtorching an ice cube!
Technical: a single image of a domestic, catering blowtorch melting an ice cube balanced on top of an upturned glass. Converted to mono in Silver Efex Pro. Clarity and local adjustments in Lightroom and then two copies made of the monochrome version. The first was split-toned to bring out the blue in the ice cube. The second was split-toned to make the blowtorch flame (originally blue) appear hotter using a red / yellow tint. The three images (original monochrome, blue ice-cube and red flame) were then merged in Photoshop and edited using masks to isolate the red and blue. The final image was then sharpened and cropped in Lightroom.
HMM!

The land looked like sapphire and emeralds at the South Holston Dam area, but the sky was pretty dreary. I amped it up a bit, and added some blue to both the sky and river to see what a more fair day along the water in Bristol would be like. As expected, it is lovely. Even grey and gloomy, this place has a beauty that can't be quenched.
Except perhaps a cup of tea in a lovely pink Starbucks mug :)
These mugs are very special to me, I got them a few years back for my birthday from some friends. My friends had these, the husband had bought them some years earlier when he was living abroad and I had always admired them (they had them in purple). When he went to London on a work trip he searched high and low for them, cruising the entire town, because they were apparantly starting to go out of production. So now you can understand why I value them so extra much - not only are they pink and cute, my friends went to so much trouble to find them for me :)

Black and white version of an earlier post.
My two buddies, Wences Shaw-Cortez and Pierce Martin enjoy some classic jump-for-silhouette action shots. Wences is a pretty graceful dude. He loves to dance and jump and frolic, and its generally pretty fluid. Pierce... is a little frightening. For him, for others, for his future offspring, he's probably about the least graceful guy I've ever met on dry ground. But put him on a windsurfer and the dude can move! I'll just try to think of him that when he's gone. Get less chills that way.
Sorry for being a missing contact. I've finally found a few minutes to post a picture at 5am, 12 hours into my 16 hour shift guarding a thermal vac chamber where we are testing my New DayStar project. Been busy as hell but its pretty fun work!

At 1.5 mile long (2.5km) the Forth Railway Bridge, was the world’s first major steel bridge, with its gigantic girder spans of 1710 ft (521m) it ranks as one of the great feats of Victorian civilization. It was begun in 1883 and formally completed on 4 March 1890.
