Met up with Anita, Dru and Mick for a bright and breezy sunrise on Blyth beach. There was a fence I've been meaning to shoot for ages, so I made my way a bit further down the beach from my normal spot and got set up in the dunes.
To be honest, this fence is probably better at sunset due to the direction it faces, but the strong breeze yesterday meant I was able to make the most of the contrast between soft focus grasses and the sharpness of the fence.

"KILLERS, RAVEN, AND MORE"
To kill someone and never need a weapon fired.
Sometimes, it is enough just in a lesser form.
For example: A word, a gesture, a look, (depending on the sensitivity
of the, "victim"), something said, something done, directly or indirectly
can be enough to harm and/or kill someone.
The noble Eagle is a powerful killer, but she would only kill to feed herself or her children. The Jackals and Coyotes kill for play even with their victims already wounded and dying, they then would feed upon them as prey. The worst are the Worms and the Maggots that
eat Animal Carcasses.
I have met in my lifetime so far, small and big killers.
Some were big and powerful killers and some were small killers that
hid around my friends, relatives, partners, and those I love.
Fortunately, I always identified and recognized them through their
repugnant and repulsive smell.
So, my Gioia Mia, take care to recognize that smell and protect yourself too.
On our window sill...Peter likes these and collects them - luckily I had a few to add to his collection!!

You might think this was taken from a tour boat specializing in whale watching. But you would be wrong. This was taken through the open window of my truck camper parked near the seashore.
These humpback whales were after capelin. You can see five here in this shot and two more just submerged slightly out of frame ... but that was just a few of these huge creatures that were in this area all day. It was a truly mesmerizing scene and very few besides us ... if any ... were privileged to see it!
As I mentioned in an earlier post, these whales have a special stretchy tissue called ventral groove blubber attached to their lower jaw or mandible. When they lower their jaws to extreme angles and swim very quickly while feeding on small fish and krill, a drag force on this blubber causes it to expand to encompass a volume that can be almost as big as the whale itself. The jaws ... as far as I an tell from the shots I took ... open at least ninety degrees and when they surface like they are doing here they quickly snap them shut ... while the water they have taken in pours out in a torrent. Some of the small capelin do too, of course ... hence the gulls in the area.
The two in the middle here are showing their upper jaw and their pink tongue. Their lower jaws are still under the water ... but you can actually the one on the left starting to close. So, you see why I say they open ninety degrees. The whale on the right is showing its lower jaw and if you look closely you can see the brown barnacles.

"Elderly Woman Behind The Counter In A Small Town"
I seem to recognize your face
Haunting familiar here
I can't seem to place it
Can I find a candle of thought
To light your name
Lifetimes are catchin' on
with me
All these changes takin place
I wish I'd seen the place
but no one's ever taken me
Hearts and thoughts they fade
fade away
hearts and thoughts they fade
fade away
I swear I recognize your breath
memories like fingerprints are slowly raisin'
of course you can't see me,
for I'm not my former
it's hard when you're stuck upon
the shelf
I changed by not changin' at all
small time predicts my face
perhaps that what no one wants to see
I just wanna scream
HELLO!
By God it's been so long
never dreamed you'd return!
but now here you are
and here I am
my hearts and thoughts they fade
away
hearts and thoughts they fade
fade away
hearts and thoughts they fade
fade away
hearts and thoughts they fade
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaway
hearts and thoughts they fade
fade away
hearts and thoughts they fade
fade away
hearts and thoughts they fade
fade away

My wife and I made a trip to Dunkeld and visited Black Linn Waterfall on the River Braan at The Hermitage. Like many Scottish waterfalls it was very impressive. Although it wasn't raining the spray from the falls on the rocks above made it very treacherous - I didn't outstay my welcome!
The inscription on the pillar reads “Here embarked the Chief of State … “, commemorating a time—about 5 centuries ago—when this tiny dock on the Lisbon waterfront was the center of government and commerce for a world geopolitical power. Zoom in, if you can read Portuguese.
Spent my last day in Portugal shooting B&W (Monochrome film simulation) in the viewfinder, straight to SD card, with a RAW backup. Very satisfying. The geotag is imprecise. Have the refresh rate for updates from the phone to the camera set slow, to avoid wasting battery power on both. Sometimes I can move a geotag, but not today.

I took this photo to highlight the wonderful things the very talented Ronda Vallejo has made...the sofa, coffee table, side tables, lamp and pillow. Elaine made the cute block sculpture. The dress was also a gift from Elaine : ) I made the clock and the ash tray is a little wooden bowl I made some indents in for cigarettes. The phone is a black Re-ment one I repainted.
Black and White. This made me think of Stevie Wonder and Paul McCartney's song. "Ebony and Ivory, living together in perfect harmony..." We are different but we are the same. Praying for peace. (Macro Mondays Theme: opposites) HMM
Yes, this was real fog and real light rays. I had this girl coming for a photo shoot. Something that I rarely do- I rarely take clients- but sometimes I do. And it was all foggy. When they arrived it was all foggy and I knew that the sun is going to come out so we rushed into the forest nearby. I used to come here with my kids at this kind of weather.

Battered by the recent wind and rain, my favourite Helenium hasn't quite thrown in the towel and surrendered yet. The skies were dark and heavy over Sussex Prairie Garden late yesterday afternoon, but there's still beauty to be found. The garden closes for the winter today and I shall be counting down the hours until it opens again on June 1st next year.

This hasn't been used for years and I wonder why it was left at the bottom of the drawer. Now when I've seen it close up I know I'll never use it. It is a kind of cheese cutter.

Last week I hiked in Silver Falls State Park, a place very familiar to me. Usually, I stay on the canyon trail just because that’s where the water falls are. This time, though, I tried something different. I avoided the canyon trail altogether and hiked the Perimeter Trail. While the canyon trail is more family friendly featuring a moderate hike with ten water falls, the perimeter trail has a strenuous hike with an elevation gain of 1,000 feet straight up. The best part? NO PEOPLE! That’s right!! There’s a sign at the trail head warning of the severity of the hike and it scares everyone away.
BEST HIKE EVER!!
my grandparents. i don't know exactly when this photograph was made, but i would guess some time in the late-1920s. they would have been in their mid-20s. grace and joe. he loved photography, though he was not a professional photographer. i remember learning about cameras with him when i was a little boy. he appreciated my fascination with his twin-lens reflex camera, either a hasselblad or a rollei, i don't remember which. i do remember learning to think upside down when framing a shot and thinking about parallax just a little bit. he bought a super-8 movie camera in the late-1950s (i think) and made movies, too. quite an interesting person to have as a grandfather. my grandmother ran the china and silver department at the big department store in downtown columbia, sc. she had quite an eye for beautiful things. my mother is moving to a new apartment, so we are finding all kinds of treasures as we downsize. sigh ...

Two and four
Two elemental figures / or are these figural elements.
Become two only when placed together.
Which defines space.
Space captures the elements
The elements format space.
Space dictates the artist.

After a bunch of holiday noise and chaos, today is a (relatively) quiet oasis of calm. I hope this is a good sign of things to come in the new year.

The Craigavon Bridge is one of three bridges in Derry, Northern Ireland. It crosses the River Foyle further south than the Foyle Bridge and Peace Bridge. It is one of only a few double-decker road bridges in Europe. It was named after Lord Craigavon, the first Prime Minister of Northern Ireland.
Craigavon Bridge is the third bridge to be built in the area. The first bridge over the River Foyle was a wooden one built in 1790. It was assembled in America and transported to Derry to be positioned in the Bridge Street area about 90 metres north of the present bridge. It was built from 1789-1791 between Bridge Street and Fountain Hill. The structure allowed for a drawbridge as the inhabitants of Strabane had navigational rights to the river.
In 1863 the steel Carlisle Bridge was erected, a little further upstream, almost where Craigavon Bridge is today, to replace the old wooden bridge after it was destroyed after being hit by an iceberg in 1862.
I must admit, I’m a huge fan of black and white compositions. This is also true for my food (I could easily live only on Oreo’s cookies, they have all the necessary nutriments for happiness), pictures (even if my gallery may burn your retina) and daily outfits. Since I gained weight (eating my photography props like there is no tomorrow !!!!), my outfits are all different shades of black with a tiny splash of white (like my shoes for instance, luckily my feet are still the same size even with the few extra pounds lol). In my head, it makes me look thinner but honestly, I’m not so sure if it really does. It is like a mirror which is supposed to make a room look bigger… I’m sorry I don’t see it. So, I told my coworkers that until my extra weight is gone, I will be dressing in black! And I will not buy any new clothes… ok maybe if I find something black at a really good price, I will cave in (very easily lol)…. Wish me luck on that one ;-).
This is my contribution to Sliders Sunday Group and also to Color my World Daily for the black and white Sunday.
Happy HSS and CMWD to all amazing participants!!
Thank you so much for all your lovely comments / favs/ general support / happy thoughts / positive vibes!! It is truly appreciated! Have a great day and see you soon!!
The Silent Witness
“I STAND FOR PEACE – HONOR - TRUTH AND JUSTICE. I STAND FOR FREEDOM...I HAVE BEEN A SILENT WITNESS TO ALL OF AMERICA’S FINEST HOURS.”
The title is taken from the poem, My Name is Old Glory by Howard Schnauber. May we always strive to live up to these ideal.
Even though we are in the digital age and the "darkroom" is now "lightroom"; the old terms persist.
Dodging and burning are terms used in photography for a technique used during the printing process to manipulate the exposure of select areas on a photographic print, deviating from the rest of the image's exposure. In a darkroom print from a film negative, dodging decreases the exposure for areas of the print that the photographer wishes to be lighter, while burning increases the exposure to areas of the print that should be darker.
Over the weekend we went to nearby Hakone Gardens, a beautiful Japanese garden in Saratoga, California. The wooden arch bridge is a center piece, inviting you to stop and reflect.
I processed a realistic and a paintery HDR photo from three RAW exposures, blended them selectively, carefully adjusted the color balance and curves, and desaturated the image. I welcome and appreciate constructive comments.

It wasn't a great day for me. Very frustrating day at the office, but I guess that's to be expected every now and then, I just wish they weren't so frequent lately.
I'm hoping that one of the things I've lined up will come through shortly and I'll be able to have a much needed change of environment.
On another note; it was actually a fairly nice day and my lunch hour by the river was quite comfortable and refreshing.
Hope everyone has had a good day.

Another upload from my St.Marys lighthouse visit the other day.Quite similar to my last upload of this subject, but taken slightly closer and obviously this time round i chose landscape instead of portrait format.
Such a wonderful sunrise of which we've had a few recently and all i can say is long may it continue.
best wishes everyone ;)

"Hope smiles from the threshold of the year to come, whispering, 'It will be happier.'" - Alfred Lord Tennyson
-----
For the first day of 2017, we were gifted sunshine and mild temperatures.
I caught up with Dawn this morning as she was pushing snow away from her car, she was frazzled and stressed and I sensed she could use a moment to step out of the city and into a world where magic seems real.
So I told her to dress her daughter for an adventure outside and led them to my happy place.
For an hour today, she let the stresses of her busy life fade away and just enjoyed her youngest daughter's wonderment with the birds who know no fear and was lifted by that feeling that anything is possible.
Once in a while, it's best to step out of the everyday and enter the enchanted.
Hope everyone has had a good start to the new year!
