GWR 1501 in NCB colliery guise Coventry colliery 5/3/1967 by John Wiltshire
Built by British Railways in 1949, loco 1501 was once an engine that shunted coaches at London Paddington station. Three sister engines (1501, 1502 and 1509) were sold to the NCB by British Railways in 1961 and subsequently used at Coventry colliery until replaced by diesels in 1969. One loco 1501 was purchased privately and was restored by 1997 for use on the Severn Valley Railway.
On 5th March 1967 John Wiltshire visited a Colliery Near Coventry and recorded seeing Ex-GWR 1501 / 1502 and 1509. In 1970 it left for the Severn Valley Raiway where after a long period of restoration returned to steam.Coventry Colliery was in the village of Keresley on the NW outskirts of the city of Coventry. The mine was also known as Keresley Pit and closed in 1991.
