Julodis pubescens ssp. yvenii (Buprestidae)

This jewel beetle is one of the most spectacular insects I have ever seen. They grow up to 3.5 cm in length and the island of Crete has its own subspecies. Unlike the larvae of many other Buprestidae, the larvae do not live in wood, but in the ground, where they feed on the roots of trees and shrubs.
