A Well Aged Scotch (the birthday boy turns 12 today) [EXPLORE: 8/21/15]

**I'd love to get some comments about your own experiences taking a canine companion out on photography trips :) **

________________________________________________

He's actually very happy despite the dark lighting, I swear haha. he got his physical yesterday and passed which means he's allowed to turn 12.

He wasn't a real healthy puppy and dealt with seizures for the first few years of his life and so i started taking him with me everywhere that I could. He's been seizure free and extremely healthy for many years now but still comes with me any chance I get.

Scotch is the main reason I got into photography and he has put up with thousands of in his face portraits and me getting him to do the same things over and over for a good shot. He's been with my for maybe 75% of the photos i've taken and he's probably been on over 100,000 miles worth of car rides at this point. he's worn out 2 rear passenger side seats and constantly has his head out the window, whether torrential rain or -5 degrees at 50mph in the Pennsylvania mountains.

Our road trips:

Scotch and I mostly travel through Maryland to Pennsylvania and into parts of West Virginia. We seem to usually find ourselves around Frederick, MD or some of the civil war battle fields and surrounding areas. Occasionally we accidentally end up at the Catoctin Mountains which basically separate Maryland from Pennsylvania. A few times we've driven through the Antietam, MD dirt farm roads that weave through civil war woods and battlefields accidentally after dark and it's the most terrifying thing he and I have done haha. Driving past Antietem takes you over a large bridge into Shepherdstown WV which I wish was closer. We are almost always in the middle of nowhere in very rural or rustic countryside and I go out of my way to get lost heading West with the GPS always set to "home". i keep his harness, his waterproof jacket, and long retractable leash in my camera backpack (along with a ridiculous amount of gadgets and supplies I'll likely never need) and have a collapsible rubber water dish and bottled waters as well. we usually head out around an hour or 2 before the sun starts to set (or earlier on weekends) and get home well after dark. sometimes if i lose track of time, we will stop somewhere and share some dinner. He prefers our weekend trips (and so do I) when we go in search of amazing roadside BBQ or other out of the way foods within the 150 mile radius i try to stick to. We are in a perpetual search to find the greatest smoked brisket and mac & cheese there is :)

Here's hoping for a few more great years with Scotch, the perfect road trip companion.
