#hysterectomy update number 4️⃣

🎉 Surgery went well, with no complications.

⏰ It took longer than expected (a little over 4 hours), which is at the very top end of the expected time for a laparoscopic hysterectomy (usually 1-3 hours, max 4).

😴 I ended up staying in the #recovery room for an extra 2 hours, but once I woke up, I was fine.

❤️ Everything that needed to be removed is gone, and ovaries looked very healthy so both stayed. No adhesions & very little loss of blood. Should have a “normal” recovery & go through “normal” #menopause.

😷 The anesthesiologist did a great job. I had no referred gas pain (very common in hysterectomies because your head is lower than your abdomen for the entire surgery) and no vivid dreams while I was under (which is what freaked me out during my last surgery) and no nausea at all when I woke up.

Interestingly, they were not able to identify my blood type prior to surgery (good thing I didn’t need a transfusion 😳, and thank goodness we got my blood count up in the week before surgery). Even with extensive testing after, they still don’t know (but have ruled out any blood related diseases), so now I have a new doctor for some follow up.

📷 I got to see lots of photos from inside my body before surgery & after the #uterus & #fibroids were removed (lmk if you wanna see, it’s something!). Apparently my uterus with fibroids weighed 300 grams (normal weight 60g) when removed (and they had to cut the largest fibroid open to be able to “deliver” it because it was too big to get out).

🏥 We stayed 3 days & 2 nights in the hospital. I was up & walking the morning after #surgery. The nurses (and @guentheralex) did an amazing job taking care of me.

In a week, I’ll go back to the doctor to check the incisions (4) & see how I’m healing. Until then it’s gonna be a lotta naps & walking around our apartment while I try to get my energy & appetite back!

Bodies are amazing. Can’t believe I was having an organ removed less than 5 days ago, and now I’m home & feeling mostly normal (aside from being suuuuper tired, slow & weak).

🎊 So so so happy to be back home now & have the scary part over with!
