American Bison ( Mom and calf )

American Bison (Buffalo) - Wild in Florida

In 1975, The Department of Natural Resources acquired ten bison from Wichita Wildlife Refuge in Oklahoma with the intent of re-establishing a herd at Paynes Prairie, their natural native grounds. They were put on a secluded portion of the preserve so that they could acclimate to their new surroundings in Florida. They now freely graze 6,000 acres of land, finding them is just a chance of luck.

Generally speaking, bison males weigh around 1,500 pounds; females about 1,000 pounds. They typically have only one calf per year, which is cinnamon brown in color and looks a lot like a cow calf. Females mature and mate as early as two years old. Males reach breeding age at three, but don't reach full maturity until they are about eight. Bison can live to be twenty to thirty years old.
